ABSTRACTAydın E., Determining Post Bariatric Surgical Problems Experienced by Individuals, Gazi University, Institute of Health Care, Nursery Program, Master Thesis, Ankara 2012.The aim of this descriptive study was to determine problems experienced by patients after bariatric surgical procedures.The study was conducted between March 1st, 2011 and August 30th, 2011 in Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital, Gülhane Military Academy of Medicine, Ankara University Faculty of Medicine Ibni Sina Hospital and General Surgical Clinics of Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, and it included 32 patients undergoing bariatric surgeries. The data was collected by the researcher through a literatary approach. Questionnaires were provided to patients before their surgeries and on the 2nd and 4th weeks following surgery. Descriptive statistical methods (numbers, percentage mean, standard deviation) and McNemar test were used in evaluating the data.According to the results of the study, it was found that at the end of the second week following the surgeries, 78% of the patients experienced pain at the surgical site, 62.5% suffered from nausea, 53.1% from constipation, 40.6% from frequent waking up at night, 46.9% from walking properly due to pain, 59.4% from bathing on their own and 34.3% from delays in starting work. It was also observed that at the end of 4th week following surgeries, most of the patients managed to overcome these difficulties.In conclusion, in light of the findings of this study it was determined that patients experienced intensive problems during the first 2 weeks of the one-month period following the surgeries; however, these problems gradually lessened. With regard to the findings, it was suggested that patients and patients? relatives should receive well-scheduled patient training and consultancy services following the surgeries.Key Words: Bariatric Surgery, Problems, Nursery Care
