Dynamic thiol-disulfid homeostasis in patients with behcet's disease

Abstract (EN)

Objective: Increasing reactive oxygen products due to insufficient antioxidant mechanism during inflammation is defined as oxidative stress. Due to increased oxidative stress and insufficient antioxidant mechanisms in Behcet's disease, it is thought to be an imbalance in the oxidant state. Our aim in this study is to evaluate the thiol-disulfide homeostasis in Behcet patients and to investigate the correlation of this homeostasis with clinical findings and HLA B51. Material and Method: This study included 50 patients and 54 healthy volunteers. Patient's age, gender, age of disease diagnosis, family history of Behcet's disease and consanguineous marriage, drugs used for the disease, use of additional drugs, disease activity were recorded. Native thiol, total thiol, plasma disulfide levels were measured for both group. In addition, HLA-B5 values were studied from the patients. Results: When the thiol-disulfide homeostasis was examined on the basis of patient and control groups, the total thiol values of the individuals in the control group were lower and the native thiol values were higher and a statistically significant difference was observed (respectively; p = 0.021, p = 0.027). Compared to the groups, individuals with no genital ulcer and eye findings had higher native thiol values and a statistically significant difference was found (respectively; p = 0.036, p = 0.035). A negative, weak, linear and statistically significant relationship was found between the disease duration of the patients and total thiol and native thiol values (respectively; p = 0.010, p = 0.014). Conclusion: Our study is the first study in which the thiol-disulfide homeostasis was used as a marker to determine cellular redox status and oxidative stress in patients with Behcet's disease. As a result of the data we obtained, there is an increase in oxidative stress and a decrease in antioxidant capacity in Behcet's disease.
