Abstract (EN)

In this study, 120 samples of particulate matter on glass fiber filters (GFF) and gas phase pollutants on polyurethane foam (PUF) were collected by using high volume air sampler. The sampler was placed on the roof of the presidency building in the campus of A.I.B.U., Bolu. Sixty daily samples were collected during 25th June-23rd August 2007 in summer time and 13th December 2007-10th February 2008 in winter time. Twenty-nine surface soil samples were collected from the 0.5 depth. The PUF and GFF samples were extracted by using soxhlet apparatus and soil samples were ultrasonically extracted. The extracted samples were eluted from the optimized Florisil and Alumina adsorption column. PCBs and PAHs were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and OCPs were determined by gas chromatography-electron capture detector (GC-ECD).Method validation was performed to determine PCBs, OCPs and PAHs. The concentrations of most of OCP compounds showed considerable increase in winter time. Generally, the concentrations of OCPs were found to be higher when the winds have blown from the sectors at which heavy agricultural activities were performed. The concentrations of OCP compounds were generally higher than the concentrations that were found in other agricultural and rural areas of the world. The winter time PAH concentrations were considerable higher than the summer time PAH concentrations. Although the concentrations were higher than the concentrations in rural areas in literature in winter season, the summer season concentrations were comparable. The important sources for PAHs in the sampling area were the domestic heating, traffic, asphalt production factory, and stubble burning. Total concentrations of PCBs were higher in winter season. Gas phase concentrations were higher than the particulate ones in both seasons. Although the concentrations of seven-eight chlorinated compounds were higher than the literature values, the others were comparable. Besides the local sources, there is an effect of long-range transport to the concentration of PCBs. The concentrations of low molecular weight persistent organic pollutants (POP) had generally higher than that of high molecular weight POPs in gas phase. Soil is a sink for all kinds of POP compounds.
