Women in public houses in the first years of the Republic

The aim of the Republic, which was founded on October 29, 1923, was to reach the level of contemporary civilizations. In order to achieve this aim, the reforms had to be delivered to the public. The reforms implemented in this direction created a new state and social order. Community Centers in the new Turkey also provided a serious support to this development. Community Centers were established in place of the Turkish Hearths, which were closed in 1931. Opened on February 19, 1932, the Community Centers occupy an important place with their unique structures within the young Republic's cultural initiatives, secularization and modernization policies. The presence of women members, their work within the institutional structure and the mission they put forward are very meaningful within the important role that the Community Centers assumed in the early years of the Republic. In this thesis, the position of women in the Community Centers has been analyzed within the framework of the Republic's will on the issue of women through social and political achievements. While the research was being conducted, the Prime Ministry Republican Archives, CHP Community Centers publications, 50 thesis studies conducted between 1990 and 2020, 61 Community Center magazines, national and local newspapers of the period, books and articles were examined. The fact that there is no study in the literature on this topic makes the research unique. Apart from this, it will fill an important gap in the literature on Community Centers as a women-centered thesis. At the same time, it is thought to be useful as an original and independent source for future studies with an impartial perspective that takes into account the conditions of the period.
