Retrospective evaluation of socio-demographic characteristics of adolescent patients admitted to the child intensive care unit of Dicle University Hospital for the suicidal attempts

ABSTRACT Introduction and Aim: Adolescents suicide is caused by genetic and biological vulnerabilities, sociocultural factors and variety of psychiatric disorders and it is often occupy our intensive care. It is also a behavioral problems that lead to serious personal and social problems. In this study, we aimed to determine the socio-demographic characteristics of the adolescent patients attempted suicide by drugs. Materials and Methods: In our study, we examined 50 patients in the adolescent age who have been admitted to intensive care between the months 2003 January -2016 May, because of the suicide attempts by drugs. Patients were analyzed according to sex, age group, education levels, their income level, living in or out of Diyarbakır, living at center or rural, number of tablets taken, drug varieties, previous psychiatric diagnosis, previous suicide attempt, refer to the season, according to the use smoking / alcohol / drugs and the feature of family. Results: 41 of the patients were female, 9 were males. The average age of 13.8, the youngest 11, the oldest was 16 years old. 13 patients in the high schools, 28 is in secondary schools, 8 patient was abandoned and one did not go to school at all. 42 cases live in Diyarbakir, 8 patient come from out of Diyarbakir. 68% of patients from the city center, 18% of patient are from the county, 14% was from the village. 84% of the patients werent smokers, 16% were smoking. None of adolescent use alcohol and drug. Only 6 patient had previously diagnosed psychiatric disorders. 40 of the patients were alive with their parents, 10 were separate reasons such as divorce / death. Most commonly taken drugs by adolescents for suicid are analgesics, antibiotics and antidepressants. 18% of patients who were diagnosed with depressive episodes, 46% impulsive interference and 8% of patient attempts have been aimed at drawing attention. Discussion and Conclusion: We aim to contribute the work to be done to reduce the predisposing factors to suicide attempt by identifying the socio-demographic characteristics of adolescents admitted to the intensive care unit due to suicidal attempts.
