Abu al-Faraj Ibn al-Jawzi approach to sects in his work titled "Talbis Iblis"

Abu al-Faraj Ibn al-Jawzī, who lived in Baghdad between 510 - 597 (1116 - 1201), was a jurist, commentator, muhaddith and preacher who devoted his life to scholarly activities. Ibn al-Jawzī, who established close relations with the Abbasid state officials in a short time with his skills in preaching, produced distinguished works in different fields. Our study, which we have prepared by researching Ibn al-Jawzī's life, his works and his students, is important for understanding his position in the Hanbalī school. Abū al-Faraj Ibn al-Jawzī, who was a versatile scholar, wrote an important book called Talbis al-Iblis to warn people against the traps set by the devil for various groups. Our study analyses Ibn al-Jawzī's approach to Islamic sects in this work. In the examination of his views and criticisms on Islamic sects, care has been taken to compare his views with both classical sources and the narratives in the work. In this study, in which the inconsistencies between various parts of the work, which consists of thirteen chapters, are also included, the criticisms made on Ibn al-Jawzī's classification of the sects are mentioned and the belonging of this classification to him is discussed. In addition, the names of the sects mentioned in the work were compared from three different copies and the correct nomenclature was tried to be determined.
