Abstract (EN)
Introduction: Architectural spaces are the basic elements of architecture and create areas of experience for users within the framework of a specific function. Depending on the changing user needs as a result of the changing conditions in the continuity of time, although the spaces can maintain their continuity in the physical sense, they may lose their characteristic features, which may result in functional inadequacies. In this case, instead of ignoring the spaces, it is a more sustainable approach to ensure that they reconnect with the users by preserving their originality. Industrial buildings that cannot meet the needs of users functionally as a result of technological developments that have increased in number and rapidly changing with the industrial revolution are also places that succumb to time, abandoned and out of use. These structures, which reflect the production and building technology of a period from the past to the present and bridge the gap between the past and the present, are reused in order to maintain their spatial continuity, and in this context, in cases where the spatial needs required by the new function cannot be met in the existing structure, volumetric increases are needed and this is solved with additional building designs. . Purpose: To examine the relationship between the existing structure and the spatial and formal context of the additional buildings, which were built to meet the needs required by the new function, in ensuring the reuse of historical industrial buildings. The examples selected within the scope of the study have examined how the planned relationship of the annex with the historical building affects the accessibility, readability and functionality of the space on the new plan scheme, positively or negatively. Scope: For this purpose, firstly, the concepts of historical industrial structure, re-functioning and new annex were conceptually examined. Afterwards, the design criteria of additional building designs in historical buildings were examined. The method of the study was created according to the design criteria examined, and the spatial relations established by the existing historical structure and the annex were analyzed within the framework of the selected examples. Method: The method of the study consists of two stages. In the first stage, the spatial analyzes created based on the design criteria were handled within the framework of the formation, spatial setup, circulation and context between the existing building and annex. In the second stage, the functionality of the existing and the spatial organization established by the annex was analyzed by using the space syntax program. Findings: It is seen that the spatial configurations, circulation organizations and relations with the environment vary in line with the way the additional structures designed in the light of the researches and analyzes are formed with the existing structure. Therefore, it can be said that the shape of the additional building designs is effective on the design in terms of spatial and functionality, and affects the spatial integration. This situation has been proven in terms of functionality with the space syntax method and explained with graphics. Results: As a result of all researches, evaluations and analyzes; It is seen that the historical building and annex are shaped vertically, horizontally, intertwined or as a space within a space, and different design criteria should be considered for each formation. It can be said that all of these criteria should be taken into account in the analysis of cores that provide vertical circulation in the annexes shaped in the vertical, the analyzes of the corridors that provide the access between the spaces in the annexes that are shaped in the horizontal, and the solutions that are shaped by creating a space within the space. Since there was no additional structure constructed with intertwined space shaping among the samples examined, an evaluation could not be made on this subject.
