Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study was to the relationship between early maladaptive schemas, emotion regulation difficulties and body image coping strategies in adults was examined. The hypothesis that body image was significantly predicted by early maladaptive schemas and emotion regulation scores was tested. In addition, it was examined sociodemographic variables provided any differentiation in terms of early maladaptive schemas, body image coping strategies and emotion regulation scores The sample of the study consisted of 454 people between the ages of 22 and 45 who have been in Istanbul. Socio-demographic Information Form, Young Schema Scale Short Form, Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Questionnaire and Body Image Coping Strategies Scale were used to measure the variables of the study. Pearson correlation, simple regression and multiple linear hierarchical regression analyses were applied to analyze the study's main hypotheses. In addition, independent groups t-test and one-way ANOVA analyses were used to determine the differences in the variables of the study according to sociodemographic variables. In the study, a significant positive relationship was found between a significant body image coping strategies related to appearance correction sub-dimension and avoidance sub-dimension and all early maladaptive schemas and emotion regulation difficulties sub-dimensions. the body image coping strategies positive logical acceptance sub-dimension and all of the emotion regulation difficulties sub-dimensions were found to be negatively and significantly related. Along with the relationship between the variables, the predictive effect was examined, and early maladaptive schema domains and emotion regulation difficulties predicted it was found that the three sub-dimensions of body image coping strategies. The sub-dimension of appearance correction was positively and significantly predicted by vulnerability and approval seeking schema dimensions. Difficulties in emotion regulation sub-dimensions did not significantly predict appearance correction scores. The explanatory rate of the model was found to be %28. Positive logical acceptance sub-dimension was predicted negatively by failure schema dimension and positively and significantly by punishment schema dimensions. The positive logical acceptance sub-dimension was predicted negatively by the difficulty in recognizing emotions and positively and significantly by the difficulty in opening emotions sub-dimension of emotion regulation difficulties. The explanatory rate of the model was found to be %21. Avoidance sub-dimension was predicted positively and significantly by failure and vulnerability schema dimension. The avoidance sub-dimension was positively and significantly predicted by the emotion regulation difficulties sub-dimensions of strength in recognizing emotions, impulse control difficulties and inability to accept emotions. The explanatory rate of the model was found to be %33 The study shows that body image coping strategies are predicted by early maladaptive schemas and emotion regulation difficulties. Since similar variables have not been studied together before, these findings emphasize the importance of body image coping strategies and contribute to the literature in terms of treatment and preventive interventions.
