Examining the relationships between attitudes towards gender roles, cognitive distortion and psychological well-being level of university students

This research is a correlational study based on the aim of examing the relationships between attitudes towards gender roles, cognitive distortions and psychological well-being levels of university students.When the related literature was examined, the studies on these three variables were not found. Examining the cognitive distortions and psychological well-being variables related to gender, relationships together reveals the importance of research. Within the demographic variables of the study (gender, age, type of department and class level they are attending, the existence, duration and status of romantic relations, and parental education status) examine the related variables. The sample of the research is composed of 172 students in Yeditepe University 2017-2018 academic year. The Gender Roles Attitude Scale, the Interpersonal Cognitive Distortions Scale and the Psychological Well-Being Scales and Demographic Information Form developed by the researcher were used. The analysis of the data was performed using the SPSS package program, Independent Sampling t-test, One-Way ANOVA, and Correlation Analyses. Based on the findings, it is revealed that students' attitudes towards gender roles indicated significant difference in the subscales of classroom and romantic relationships, and cognitive distortions do not make a significant difference in grade, presence of romantic relationship and duration of the relationship, and parental education level. The scores of the university students' gender role attitude subscales and the interpersonal cognitive distortions subscales were found as significantly correlated with psychological well-being. The gender role attitudes of the students and the interpersonal cognitive distortions significantly predict psychological well-being of the students. Findings obtained from the research were discussed and interpreted, and various suggestions were presented for further studies.
