Evaluation of the opinions of patient relatives related to physical restraint by mixed method

The study was designed to evaluate the views of the patients' relatives about physical restraint. The population of the study consisted of patients who were physically restricted (Internal Medicine, Chest Diseases, Internal Medicine Intensive Care Unit, Anesthesiology and Reanimation Intensive Care Unit, KVC Intensive Care Unit, Brain and Nerve Diseases Intensive Care Unit) in Düzce University Health Application and Research Center. (N = 984). The sample consisted of relatives of patients who had physical limitations with 95% confidence, 91% strength and 5% sensitivity and volunteered to participate in the study (n: 277). The qualitative sample consisted of 22 patient relatives who were interviewed using maximum diversity sampling, one of the purposeful sampling methods, in order to obtain in-depth information and reveal the differences. Data saturation was taken into consideration when deciding the sample size. Authorizations were obtained for the research and data were collected between January 2018-December 2018. The quantitative data of the research was obtained by using "Data Collection Form" and the qualitative data was obtained by using face to face interview method and "Individual In-depth Interview Form". Non-parametric data analysis (Monte Carlo, X2-Chi Square) and content analysis methods were used to evaluate the data. According to the results of the study, male patients were more restricted, more physical restraint was applied to unconscious patients, physical restraint usage rate was significantly higher in other intensive care units than the other wards, information given to the relatives of the patient was not sufficient and alternative methods should be applied, physical restraint performed by the relatives of the patient for treatment purposes, but the complications seen in patients (deterioration in circulation, muscle strength, osteoporosis, pressure injury, disruption of skin integrity, agitation, insomnia, delirium, deterioration of body image, sensory deprivation, etc.) was perceived as negative.
