Determination of the relationship between sleep quality and comfort levels of hemodialysis patients

The research was carried out in a descriptive relationship-seeking type in order to determine the relationship between the sleep quality and comfort levels of hemodialysis patients. The research was carried out with 126 kidney failure patients who were treated in three hemodialysis centers, two of which are public and one private, located in Kayseri city center between December 2021 and January2022. The data of the study were obtained using the Patient Information Form, Pitssburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Hemodialysis Comfort Scale (HDCS). Reliability analysis, descriptive statistics, independent groups t test, ANOVA analysis of variance, Pearson Correlation Analysis and Linear Regression analysis were used in the evaluation of the data. In the study, the level of significance was taken as p<0.05. In the study, hemodialysis patients participating of 54% were female, average 57.12±13.33 years old, 37.3% were between 55-69 years old, 60.3% were married, 34.1% were literate, 82.5% were unemployed, 20.6% were It was determined that smokers and 1.6% used alcohol, 28% were diagnosed with kidney failure between 1-5 years, 48.6% were diagnosed with chronic diseases other than kidney failure. In the study, the majority of hemodialysis patients were on hemodialysis for more than one year, all of them had a hemodialysis session of 4 hours, %95.2 were three times a week, and %42.1 were on hemodialysis in a private center, the most common hemodialysis-related feeling of tiredness/decreased energy, muscle cramps, difficulty in maintaining sleep, falling asleep. It was determined that they had difficulty in diving, itching, feeling anxious and feeling sad. In the study, it was determined that hemodialysis patients scored an average of 13.17±3.20 points in the PSQI and an average of 31.35±6.26 points in the HDCS, and the sleep quality of the patients was poor and their comfort was at a good level. In the study, the correlation value between the total score of PSQI and the total score of HDCS of hemodialysis patients was negative and low (r=-0.297; p<0.005). It was determined that the decrease in sleep quality in hemodialysis patients significantly reduced the comfort level. In the study, it was found that there was a significant relationship between the sleep quality variable of hemodialysis patients and the variable of comfort in the hemodialysis treatment process, it explained 10.4% of the total variance of the sleep quality level of the patients and the comfort in the hemodialysis treatment process, and the poor sleep quality of the hemodialysis patients decreased the comfort in the hemodialysis treatment process by -0.028 times. It was determined that this effect was not significant (p>0.05). As a result; It has been determined that there is a significant and low level relationship between the sleep quality level in hemodialysis patients and the hemodialysis comfort level. In the study, it was determined that the poor sleep quality of hemodialysis patients had a reducing effect on the comfort in the hemodialysis treatment process.
