The reflection of Ottoman modernisation on the comments of the quranic verses related to the women in the time of the ii. constitution

The subject of `the status of woman in Islam? is one of the most important issues discussed in the Islamic World. This subject is neither a new issue nor solved for ages. The verses about the dressing, education and teaching of woman and the relations between men and women in a society have been discussed a lot and variety of comments has been made. Tafsir studies, which followed a similar pattern until 19. and 20.centuries, have had some variations due to the influence of modernism. The most prominent subjects, influenced by modernism have been the comments on the status of the woman. The periodicals of Sırat-ı Müstakim/Sebilürreşad which are known as historical documents of the last period of Ottoman have an important role to make a social-cultural analysis of this period of time and in observing the variations of comments on the verses about woman. Thus, we investigated the discussions about woman in these periodicals which has not been studied previously as an individual subject. In this study which the verses about the status of the woman is the main subject as the title implies, we made use of classical tafsir sources as well as authentic hadeeth books to notice of the changes in modern comments, and to compare them with applications during the time of Prophet Muhammed (s.a.s). Our thesis consists of introduction, five main chapters and conclusion. In Chapter 1, the influence of modernism on the Islamic World and the changes occurred especially in terms of tafsir activities have been stressed. In Chapter 2, the periodicals after Tanzimat (the political reforms of Abdülmecid in 1839) and the position of Sırat-ı Müstakim/Sebilürreşad among all of the periodicals and tafsir activities have been studied. In Chapter 3, the effects of modernism on the classical comments about woman have generally been discussed and other woman magazines have been used for this purpose. In the following chapters, the articles about woman on the periodicals of Sırat-ı Müstakim/Sebilürreşad have deeply been investigated and some evaluations have been made about critics by the ulema. In the conclusion, the results of this study have generally been evaluated, and importance of the need for such studies has been emphasized from a social perspective.
