Abstract (EN)

Knee osteoarthritis is a chronic and progressive bone joint disease that is frequently seen in the elderly population. It causes severe pain, chronic morbidity and loss of work force in affected individuals and creates a burden of care. The burden of care of the caregiver brought about by chronic diseases is one of the most frequently researched current issues. The daily living activities and sleep quality of the patients are among the factors that affect the care burden of the patient. In our study, we aimed to examine the effect of individuals with osteoarthritis performing their daily living activities independently on the sleep quality and the care burden perceived by the caregiver patient relatives, considering that the functional limitation caused by osteoarthritis has an effect on the sleep quality and care burden of the patient. We carried out our study as a descriptive cross-sectional with observational design. The population of the study consisted of advanced knee osteoarthritis patients who applied to the Orthopedics and Traumatology Outpatient Clinic. The Patient Descriptive Questionnaire, which determines the socio-demographic characteristics of the patients, the KATZ Activities of Daily Living Scale (ADL), the Sleep Quality Scale, and the Caregiver Burden Scale for the relatives who care for the patient were used. Statistical analyzes of the obtained data were made. The study sample consisted of 160 people and the mean age was 68.6±5.8 years. 69.4% (n=111) of the patients consisted of women. Mean (minimum-maximum) care burden scale values of the cases 58.9±12(30-80), mean KATZ ADL (minimum-maximum) scale value 4.3±1(2-6), Pittsburgh sleep quality mean (minimum-maximum) scale value It was observed that it was 9.6±4(2-18). A negative and significant relationship was found between the KATZ ADL scale values and the burden of care (P=0.000). A positive and significant relationship was found between Pittsburgh sleep quality sleep scale values and caregiver burden (P=0.002). However, a negative and significant relationship was found between KATZ ADL scale values and Pittsburgh sleep quality sleep scale values (P=0.006).
