The evaluation of the opinions of primary school teachers and of science and technology teachers about teaching science and technology lessons at 4th and 5th grades of primary schools

The main aim of this research is to evaluate the opinions of primary school teachers and of science and technology teachers about teaching science and technology lessons at 4th and 5th grades of primary schools.Scanning has been used as the method in the research. The sample group of the research is 317 primary school and science and technology teachers, lecturing on the Anatolian side of Istanbul?s primary schools in 2011-2012 education calender. In order to gather data for the research, personal information forms and polls have been developed. Percentage, frequency values and across tables have been utilized in analyzing the data.It has been realized that those primary school teachers who graduated from departments other than science or technology feel themselves unable to conduct experiments and activities. It has been concluded that those who benefited from in-service training are more effective at conducting experiments and activities than those who did not take such a training.Science and technology teachers are of the opinion that MEB (National Education Ministry) should make some changes about teaching science and technology lessons at 4th and 5th grades of primary schools. Primary school teachers find themselves successful at 4th and 5th grades. On the other hand, science and technology teachers point out that if science and technology lessons are lectured by science and technology teachers themselves, students will grasp the lesson better at 6th, 7th and 8th classes.Both science and technology teachers and primary school teachers demand a person staffed at science laboratories to prepare experiments and activities. The primary school tecahers, lecturing science and technology at 4th and 5th grades, appear to need in-service training on teaching science and technology lessons. The teachers whose length of service is between 1-5 year(s) consider themselves even more incapable of conducting experiments and activitities and teaching science compared to other seniority groups. Both science and primary school teachers admit that science and technology lessons at 4th and 5th grades require more expertise than the other subjects do.Key words: Primary school 4th and 5th grades, Primary School Teacher, Science and Technology Teacher.
