Abstract (EN)

Quantitative research method was used in this study which examined the effect of Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) method on student achievement and attitude in fractions of primary school at 4th grade level. The research was conducted in 2017-2018 academic year. The population of the study consist of 4thgrade students of A primary school located in Konak district of Izmir. . In order to form homogeneous groups , pre-test was applied to the students of the research. Two data collection tools were used. These are math achievement test and math attitude scale. In the experimental group, the teaching was carried out by the researcher herself, while the control group continued with the traditional method of teaching with his / her classroom teachers. In the study, the general principles of RME based teaching to the experimental group were prepared according to the achievements of the 4. Fractions unit in the 4th grade program. Real life problems in the activities. Students have access to the concepts and formulas in the fractions unit during the problem solving process. The control group was provided with the necessary information and necessary information about the subject, and the exercises were solved on the basis of the textbook. At the end of the unit, mathematics achievement test and math attitude scale were applied to both groups and compared with the pre-application data of the groups. One month after the application, retention rates were measured by applying mathematics achievement test to both groups again. As a result of this comparison, it is concluded that the students who are learning the fractions subject with RME have higher academic achievement, retention rates and Mathematical Attitude Notices than students learning traditional methods.
