THE EFFECT OF INHALER LAVENDER ON PAIN DEVELOPING DURING VASCULAR ACCESS IN HEMODIALYSIS PATIENTS Emel TAŞAN Master Thesis, Department of Nursing Internal Medicine Nursing Programme Thesis Advisor: Assoc. Dr. Özlem OVAYOLU January 2018, 64 page The study was conducted as a randomized, controlled and experimental study with patients receiving treatment in a dialysis unit between March and April 2015 for evaluating the effect of inhaler lavender on pain developing during vascular access in hemodialysis patients. Permissions were obtained from the Ethical Committee, the institution, and the patients before the study. The sample size was calculated via power analysis and the patients meeting the inclusion criteria were randomized using the simple random sampling method and divided into intervention (30) and control (30) groups. The data of the study were collected by the researchers using a questionnaire prepared in accordance with the literature and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). VAS was used in determining the pain levels of patients. In the scale; 0 signifies no pain, whereas 10 signifies worst pain. For the inhaler lavender application; a mixture containing 1:10 lavender and sweet almond oil was prepared according to the literature knowledge and expert opinion. The patients in the intervention group were ensured to be inhaled in a total of three sessions lasting for three-five minutes in each session by spilling three drops of that mixture on a sterile sponge and keeping it 10 cm away. After completing that application in the intervention group, a needle was inserted into the fistule by the clinic nurses and pain levels were evaluated again after the application. The data of the study were analyzed via appropriate tests in the computer environment. It was determined that the pain mean score of the intervention group, which was 3.8±0.3 before the inhaler lavender application, decreased to 3.0±0.2 after the application (p<0.05); whereas, the pain mean score of the control group increased from 5.4±0.3 to 5.6±0.6 (p>0.05). The results of this study show that inhaler lavender caused no negative effect and can be applied confidently for pain control. Keywords: Hemodialysis, pain, inhaler lavender, nursing
