Abstract (EN)
Modernization Criticism in İsmet Özel and Charles Taylor The subject of this study; it is a comparative analysis of Ismet Özel and Charles Taylor's criticisms of modernization. For this purpose, the criticisms directed towards modernization by both Özel and Taylor in this study include the definition of concepts such as "religion", "civilization", "technical", "instrumental reason", "alienation", "identity", "social imagination", and "multiculturalism" and it is evaluated within the framework of mutual interaction with each other. The study was carried out primarily through the literature review on the primary sources of Özel and Taylor. In addition to primary sources, secondary sources, and supportive sources of other authors and thinkers within the scope of the subject are also included. In the study, it has been revealed that modernization affects institutions such as identity, religion and recognition through dynamics such as technique, technology, urbanization, consumption culture, instrumentalization, and as a result, it has caused changes in the dominant imaginations of societies. Afterwards, it was examined in the light of the findings of Özel and Taylor that the changing imagination caused various problems such as individuation, alienation, uniformization, loss of meaning. Özel and Taylor modernization; to cause a mechanized and uniform understanding of the individual, to destroy the traditional dynamics that are effective in the identity formation process of the individual, to cause a regression in religion, the rise of secularization, to prepare the ground for an economy-based order to surround the whole world and impose its own rules with the effect of instrumentalization of the mind has criticized many related dynamics in the context. Taylor attributes a primary importance to elements such as urbanization, economy and technique in the modernization process, and Taylor attributes a secondary importance to these elements. While Özel insists on Turkish identity (Muslim Turk) against the problems of modernization, Taylor offers a solution proposal for the axis of "multiculturalism and recognition" policies. The religion-based solution proposal of Özel, Taylor responds with a multi-cultural and civilization-based solution set. Keywords: İsmet Özel, Charles Taylor, modernization, technique, secularization.
