The effectivenss of conceptual change text on understanding of magnetism concept an attitude toward physics

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to explore the effectivenss of conceptual change text over traditionally designed science text on understanding of magnetism concept, and attitude toward physics as a school subject. The subject of this study consited of 46 tenth grade students from two different Physics Classes in Ankara Ayrancı Super High School. The study was conducted in the spring semester in 2003 and over a period of three weeks. There were two grups in the study. The experimental group was instructed by conceptual change oriented instruction while the control group was insructed by traitionally designed physics instruction. Students' probable misconceptions had been identified from the literature. The effect of treatment on depend variables; physics achievement related to magnetism concept measured by Magnetism Concept Test; physics attitude scores measured by Attitude Scale Toward Physics as a School subject. Science Process Skill Test was used at the begining of the study to determine students' science process skills. Dependent t-test was used for testing t he hipothesis oft he study. The results s howed that conceptual change text group scored significantly higher than the traditional science text g roup w ith respect to achievement related to magnetism concept. In addition the results showed that conceptual change text group scored significantly more positive than the traditional science text group with respect to attitude toward physics as a school subject. The results of this study and the instruments developedand here will be used for similar purposes in furter studies. Key Words : Conceptual Change Text, Magnetism, Misconceptions.
