The effect of the protection of urban identity on the urban image and the perception of livable city: Tophane and its environment

Byzantine Empire The stratifications over the years in the region that changed rapidly due to the coastal trade in that period were conveyed in the thesis. The development of the multi-layered structure of the region, the reasons and results of this development are explained in the thesis as a result of researches on various sources. I will examine the Tophane district, one of the historical districts of this city, which has turned into a metropolis and even a megapolis today. Tophane, which we can call both the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus district, has undergone many changes throughout history due to its proximity to the historical peninsula. While there was no change in the region due to economic depressions and state policies in the first periods of the Republic, we can talk about great changes and destructions after 1950. After these changes, the layered structure of Tophane, in which a large part of today's state was formed, is conveyed in the thesis. Although these changes, which are close to today, have developed on the basis of zoning movements, we cannot talk about a healthy change for the region. Because, in this trend that started with the concretization after 1980, we see that neither the historical monuments of the city are protected, the silhouette of the region is respected, nor the buildings worthy of Istanbul are built. Studies have been shaped on the effects of today's changes in the region, the newly built structures and the negative and positive values that these structures bring to the region. At this point, the Galataport structure has been elaborated in detail. Data were collected from various sources on what they brought to the region and analyzes were made on these data.
