Abstract (EN)

Aim: The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of sleep hygiene training and deep breathing-coughing exercise training on the after discharge quality of sleep and life in COPD diagnosed patients. Method: This study is a semi-experimental study with pre-test post-test groups. The study was conducted in a group of 30 COPD patients taken as intervention group and 30 patients in the control group in a state hospital between 25 February and 30 April 2018. Patient Information Form, Factors Affecting Sleep Form, The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Scale (PSQI) and the Quality of Life Scale (SF-36) were administered as a pre-test before deep breathing-coughing exercise and sleep hygiene training were given in the intervention group. Patients were given a deep breathing-coughing exercise and sleep hygiene training the day before the discharge. The same form and scales were reapplied one month after the discharge. In the control group, the same forms were applied without any training. Findings: 70% of the patients in the intervention group were male and mean of age 64,56±11,37, 70% were married and 93.33% was primary school graduate. Of the patients in the control group, 66.67% were male, mean of age 68,56±12,59, 76.67% were married and 96.67% were primary school graduates. Patients in the intervention group had PSQI pre-training average of 14.20±1.45 and post- training average of 12.57±0.97. In the control group had PSQI pre-training average of 15.00±1.89 and post- training average of 14.80±1.13. The Quality of Life Scale (SF-36) pre-training average of the patients in the intervention group was 43.98±12.72 and the post-training average was 117.12±15.09. The Quality of Life Scale (SF-36) pre-training average of the patients in the control group was 36.93±5.77 and the post-training average was 38.13±6.77. There was a statistically significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores of total PSQI and Quality of Life Scale (p<0.05) in intervention group. There was no statistically significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores total PSQI and Quality of Life Scale in control group (p>0.05). Results: Sleep hygiene and deep breathing-coughing exercises training were found to be effective on sleep and quality of life.
