Evaluation of effectiveness of pre-procedural information on anxiety levels among planned coronary angiography patients (Sample of Sivas province)

This study was conducted to determine the effect of pre-procedural patient education on anxiety levels among planned coronary angiography patients. The sample of this case-control study consisted of 200 patients, divided into two groups as the case and the control groups, who were planned to undergo coronary angiography procedure in Cumhuriyet University Research and Application Hospital Cardiac Care Facility in November-December 2017, admitted to the cardiology ward and coronary intensive care unit, able to communicate, agreed to participate in the study, excluding health care staff. All of the sample was included in the study and agreed to participate. The study data were collected using an identification form for the patients who underwent coronary angiography, a questionnaire consisting of items related to pre- and post-procedural applications in coronary angiography and STAI-1 (state anxiety) and STAI- 2 (persistent anxiety) scales under direct observation. Percentages, mean, frequencies, standard deviation, Mann Whitney U and Kuskall Wallis tests, ANOVA and Pearson correlation analysis were used in the analysis of the data. 51.0% of the patients were female while 49.0% were male and 31.5% of them were between 31-45 years of age. The STAI-1 mean score was 40.2 ± 4.2, and the STAI-2 mean score was 47.6 ± 1.7. STAI-1 and STAI-2 scores were found to be higher among the patients not receiving education than those receiving education. The non-educated patients who were planned to undergo coronary angiography in this study were found to have moderate state anxiety and persistent anxiety.
