Abstract (EN)
Sustainability is one of the issues that affects every aspect of life today. Considering its dimensions and nature, it is seen that sustainability is not only environmental, but also has economic, social and cultural aspects. In terms of architecture, sustainability is important in terms of ensuring the continuity of history. Therefore, historical buildings not only reflect the spirit of the time, but also provide information about the aesthetic understanding of the period. Since the 1980s, there have been many global developments in sociocultural, regional, economic and political fields. Problems such as globalization, increased access to information, technology and transportation often cause these changes. It is known that these regulations, which are beneficial in many areas, also have an impact on architecture. As a result of the changes in the architecture sector, preferences for hotel architecture have also changed. Therefore, the cultural sustainability of the buildings has been jeopardized. According to studies in the literature, the concept of sustainability is primarily applied to ecological sustainability, while there are relatively few studies on cultural sustainability. The Termal Hotel is a striking example of traditional architecture and is a culturally authentic Turkish house, described as the first product of the National Architecture movement. Although the hotel was demolished in 1984, it was reconstructed in 2010 in its original form thanks to works that started in 2004. The aim of this study is to present a proposal for the preservation of the reconstructed Termal Büyük Otel and to evaluate the cultural sustainability of Yalova Thermal Region from an architectural point of view.
