Abstract (EN)
The main aim of this thesis is to compare the self esteem, perceived social support, social appearance anxiety and mental well-being of adolescents who do and do not perform licensed sports. The thesis aims to provide information about this subject and contribute to the literature. The sample of this study constitutes a total of 320 adolescents, including 160 licensed sports and 160 non-sports, aged 14-18 years. Perceived Social Support, Respect for Two Dimensional Self, Social Appearance Anxiety and Mental Well- Being scales were applied to adolescents participating in the research. In the basic findings of the study, it was observed that adolescents with licensed sports had significantly higher scores on mental well-being, self-esteem, perceived social support scales than non-sports adolescents. In addition, it was found that scores of perceived social support, self esteem, mental well being and social appearance anxiety of licensed athletes differ according to their associations with their teammates, while they do not show any significant difference according to their relationship with their coaches. In addition, adolescents with licensed sports and adolescents without licensed sports do not differ significantly in terms of school achievement, the social environment in which they associate with their teachers, the social environment they are supposed to be helping, and the number of close friends. When it comes to the reasons why adolescents engaged in licensed sports do sports, it turns out that the greatest proportion is to increase popularity.
