Abstract (EN)

Materialism is a view that exists in the belief that existence is material or that reality is material. According to this view, what is present or actual is only material. The article is the essence of the universe or the basic founding element. There are incidents, situations, and things that can only be perceived by the five senses. There is no reality beside those. Materialism is an important philosophical product of western thought. This thought has been considered as a philosophical profession, a political understanding in Western countries, as well as an important issue of civilization, education and knowledge. Materialism is first seen in ancient Greece as a systematic idea in the history of world thought. This idea has been turned into a philosophical system by Greek philosophers Leukippos and Democritus, Epicurus and Lucretius. In the Early Ages, materialist thought was shaped around the question of ' what is the main substance of the universe?'. The philosophers gave various answers to this question such as water, fire, earth, air etc. In the Middle Ages, knowledge has not developed much because of limitation of authorities of churches. Again, when we look at the Middle Ages, the materialistic thought, which can not find a space of motion has not recorded new developments until the 17th century in the result of the domination of the scholastic philosophy. Along with the 17th century there was a revival in materialism, especially as a result of improvements in physics. Along with the 19th century, metaphysical thoughts have gradually been brought to an end by the influence of developments in science such as biology, zoology, medicine, psychology and anthropology as well as physics and chemistry. Especially with Charles R. Darwin's thesis on the formation and reproduction of living things, Ludwig Feuerbach's human-centered philosophy and Sigmund Freud's findings on psychoanalysis have accelerated the materialist thought. In the pre-Islamic period, materialism manifests itself as pagan belief with Dehriyyun whom were believing that neither existence nor nonexistence has been created by God but the air, the water, the fire, the earth, and the time so they were also believing that these thoughts will bring themselves closer to God. Religious acceptances and materialist assumptions were influenced by each other until nowadays. Today, we can say that materialism is effective on the basis of different movements such as false beliefs, lack of faith and atheism. Again, we can say that there is materialism in the basis of all the struggles for this worldly life, selfishness, stinginess and lack of zakat, etc. So we aimed to investigate materialism and what kind of negative effects it has got on Islamic values and life of Muslims in today' world. Key Words: Materialism, Matter, Universe, Being, Dehriyun, Greed,Selfishness, Hereafter.
