Özet (EN)

This study is an ethnographic study with discourse analysis describing thepatterns of negotiation of meaning functions in text-based synchronous computermediated communication. Two research questions were determined in this study: (a)what types of negotiation of meaning are seen; (b) is there any difference betweenNative Speakers (NSs) and Non-Native Speakers (NNSs) of English in using thenegotiation of meaning functions. Thirty third-year students in the Department ofForeign Languages Education at Abant Izzet Baysal University and eight native speakersof English participated in this study. Each student joined two discussion sessions with at least two native speakers todiscuss two short stories which they read beforehand. Semi-structured questions wereused in these discussions and the observer did not join the sessions actively lest heshould influence the results. The transcripts of the chat logs were sent via e-mailmessage to all participants.Discourse analysis was applied to the data obtained and Patterson and Trabaldo?s(2006) taxonomy was adapted and compared. At the end of this study it was observed that two categories, titled ascomprehension check and reply comprehension, had not been observed in the data. Moreover, four categories were added to Patterson and Trabaldo?s (2006) taxonomy. These were confirmation, vocabulary check, elaboration request and reply elaboration. Some similar and different points in native speakers and non-native speakers? dataappeared in using negotiation of meaning functions. The most frequently used ones werefound to be different, but the least frequently used ones were found to be similar. Theseresults were parallel with the literature. The findings of this study give insights to researchers, educators and teachers ofEnglish Language in terms of patterns of negotiation of meaning functions in text-basedsynchronous computer mediated communication. Researchers and educators mightbenefit from the results of this study while programming online courses and teachersmight have an idea of the patterns involved in this kind of environment before directingtheir students there.Key Words: Computer Mediated Communication, Negotiation of Meaning,Discourse Analysis.
