The role of smoking on multiple sclerosis fatique

In this study first of all, the effect of smoking on MS patients' fatigue and disability is aimed to be searched. The study was prospective and performed at Gaziantep University Department of Neurology. Research coverage has been taken into three groups.The groups were consisted of 40 smoker MS patient, 40 nonsmokerMS patients according to the McDonald diagnostic criteria and 50 healthy individuals without MS. Neurological fatigue index (NF-MS) test is used to determine the fatigue of MS patients. Sociodemographic characteristics of all patients in the study, age, gender, marital status, education level, employment status, has been created in the form of patient follow-up duration of the disease and the survey results.The detection of patient disability were determined by the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS). Addictive levels of smoking of patient was determined by Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence. Depression status of all cases was determined with BECK Depression Inventory (BDI). The research findings were analyzed with software SPSS'20. Statistical analyed were done with determination Statistic test, İndependent Sample T test, ANOVA and corelation tests. As a result, the fatigue wasnot correlated with smoking in MS but fatigue frequency was higher than in healthy people. However, it was found that there was no significant difference between smoker and non-smoker fatigue levels in MS patients. In addition to, as in coherent with the literature medium and light depression has been determined in MS patients and this finding was getting worse with smoking.
