Investigation of student opinions about parent involvement in secondary school mathematics homework

The aim of this research is to reveal the thoughts and opinions of the students about parent participation in homework. In this direction, data were collected through focus group interview, which is a semi-structured interview technique, in accordance with the qualitative research directive. The case study model, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the research. The study group of the research consists of six secondary school 8th grade students who regularly do their mathematics homework in four public schools in the Kovancılar district of Elazig. While creating the sample of the research, it was decided according to the stratified sampling method. While collecting the research data, focus group interviews were conducted with the students in an online environment. In the analysis of the data, the focus group interview recordings were transcribed and the student views were coded and analyzed. As a result of the analysis of the research data, five students' mathematics homework contributed to their academic success, one student did not contribute anything, parents mostly did not participate in the process of doing mathematics homework, and the students did not need much academic help from their parents, they progressed faster and were more comfortable while doing their mathematics homework alone, Parents' motivating speeches, It has been determined that self-confidence and support increase their willingness to do math homework, parents' control, frequent homework reminders and insecurity decrease their willingness to do math homework. It is seen that the students praise the behaviors such as making an effort to solve the questions in mathematics homework, spending time, being careful, doing the homework on time, preparing regular homework, and criticizing the behaviors such as not making an effort to solve the problems that are difficult, not repeating the subject enough, spending too much time on the problem. has been reported.
