Investigation of the role of physical education teacher in secondary school students' attitudes to physical education and sports lesson and school

The aim of the study is to determine the role of physical education and sports teachers in secondary school students' attitudes towards school and physical education and sports lessons and to determine the relationships according to demographic characteristics. The sample of the research consists of a total of 920 students, 449 students from the 7th grade and 471 from the 8th grade of 6 secondary schools determined in the Körfez district of Kocaeli province. In the research, "School Attitude Scale" developed by Adıgüzel (2012), "Physical Education Lesson Attitude Scale" developed by Pehlivan (1997) and "Physical Education Teacher Qualifications Scale" developed by Demirhan, Coşkun and Altay (1996) were used. Descriptive and descriptive statistics were performed to analyze the data. For this purpose, t test, ANOVA, Pearson Correlations and Regression analyzes were applied. As a result, a significant difference was found in attitudes towards school in favor of girls, 7th graders, students whose fathers are athletes, students who say sports equipment is good, and students who say their academic success is very good. A significant difference was found in attitudes towards physical education and sports lessons in favor of boys, 7th graders, licensed athletes, those whose mothers were not athletes, those whose fathers were athletes, and students who said their sports equipment was good. A significant difference was found in the opinions regarding teacher qualifications in favor of students whose mothers were not athletes, students whose fathers were athletes, students who said their sports equipment was good, and students who said their course success was very good. In addition, physical education teacher qualifications positively affect the attitude towards physical education lessons and the attitude towards school. Again, the attitude towards physical education class positively affects the attitude towards school. Based on these results, in order for students to have a healthy attitude towards school, relevant education stakeholders should consider physical education teacher qualifications and practices, support programs, etc. that will make physical education lessons more effective. It is recommended that studies be taken into consideration.
