The effect of health belief model based education and motivational interviewing on mothers' knowledge, belief and attitudes towards HPV vaccine

The study aiming to increase mothers' knowledge, beliefs and attitudes towards Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination through training and motivational interviews conducted within the framework of the Health Belief Model (HBM); pre-intermediate-post test was conducted as a randomized controlled experiment. The sample of the study consisted of 63 mothers (31 experimental, 32 control) who had a high school daughter. In the research, the data were collected with the "Demographic and Descriptive Characteristics Information Form", "Health Belief Model Scale for Human Papilloma Virus and its Vaccination (HBMS-HPVV)" and "Human Papilloma Virus Knowledge Scale (HPV-BÖ)". HBM-based motivational interviews were made by phone three times to the mothers in the experimental group and a training brochure was given before the second telephone interview. A total of 4 measurements were made in both groups, including the pre-test. According to group and time measurements, there was a significant difference in group*time interaction in HBMS-HPVV benefit, sensitivity, perception of severity and scale total score averages (p<0.05). There was a significant difference in group*time interaction in HPV-BÖ total and sub-dimension mean scores according to group and time measurements (p<0.05). At the end of the study, 24 mothers from experimental group and 5 mothers from control group decided to have their daughters vaccinated against HPV. Motivational interviews were effective in increasing the knowledge and belief of mothers about the HPV vaccine and making the decision to have the vaccine.
