Siddiq Hasan Khan (D. 1307/1890) and Hadith Commentary Method

In this study, between the years 1832-1890 he lived in India, he is considered one of the founders of the Ahl-i Hadīth school in India, Muhammad Siddīq Hasan Khān al-Qannawjī and hadith commentaries analysed. A versatile scholar elitising Siddīq Hasan Khān, especially in the science of hadith, in the field of Islamic sciences in different languages (Arabic, Urdu and Persian) more than 220 has written works. Author especially in the field of hadith commentary has two important studies. These studies are commentaries on the mukhtasars of Sahīhayn. The first of these is ʿAwn al-Bārī li-halli Edillat al-Bukhārī, a work on al-Tajrīd al-Sarīh, one of the mukhtasars of al-Bukhārī's al-Jāmiʿ al-Sahīh. The second is a commentary on al-Mukhtasar al Sahīhi Muslim (al-Jāmiʿ al-Muʿlim bi-maqāsid al-Jāmiʿ al-Muʿlim), one of the mukhtasars on Muslim's al-Jāmiʿ al-Sahīh, entitled al-Sirāj al-Wahhāj min kashfi Metālibi Sahīhi Muslim b. Hajjāj. Our research consists of an introduction and three chapters. The subject of the study in the introduction, importance, purpose, method and sources after giving information about, the concept of "commentary", the need for hadith commentary and the emergence and development of commentaries are mentioned. Continued during the lifetime of Siddīq Hasan Khān political, social and religious situation in India and the Islamic schools of the period are mentioned. In the first chapter, Siddīq Hasan Khān's life and scientific personality are given; commentaries were introduced and the sources he used in his commentaries were tried to be specified. In the second chapter, Siddīq Hasan Khān's method of commentary is presented by way of exemplification. In the third chapter, deals with Siddīq Hasan Khān's approach to some of the hadith/sunnah and aqā'id/kelām issues mentioned in his commentaries. At the end of the study, Siddīq Hasan Khān's commentaries, especially the commentators of Sahīhayn he benefited a lot from the previous commentators, that he was influenced by the previous commentators in his method of explaining the hadiths adopted a transmissionist method in hadith commentaries and therefore it is understood that that he does not have a unique method of commentary.
