Abstract (EN)

This study; It was conducted to examine the relationship between the demographic characteristics of smoking and non-smoking adult individuals (for university students studying in Istanbul), and their levels of Coping with Stress and Self-confidence. The research was planned as a descriptive study in the comparison type relational survey model. The research was carried out with university students studying in Istanbul in the 2019-2022 academic year. 398 university students who volunteered to participate in the study were included. In the research, two different scales were used in order to determine the levels of coping with stress and self-confidence of university students. The data collected online by the researcher were transferred to the SPSS program, and SPSS 25.0 was used in the data analysis of the study. In the analysis of the data, independent student t-test was used in the double-group analyzes and Oneway ANOVA tests were used in the analyzes of more than two groups. Tukey test, one of the Post Hoc tests, was used to determine the source of the difference between groups in more than two group analyses. Multiple logistic regression model was used to determine the factors affecting students' smoking. In the Styles of Coping with Stress scale, males compared to females (p<0.001); Compared to non-smokers (p<0.001); It was determined that those with an income of 2001-3000 TL and 3001 TL and more were superior in coping with stress than those with an income of 1000 TL and below (p=0.001). In the self-confidence scale, the single ones compared to the married ones (p=0.003); Compared to non-smokers (p<0.001); It was determined that those aged 22-25 had higher self-confidence than those aged 26-29 (p=0.044) (p<0.05). It was determined that as university students' styles of coping with stress increased, their self-confidence also increased (p<0.001). The students who have high SBCT scale scores are 0.5 times more likely to smoke than those with low scores; Those with high self-confidence scale were 0.3 times higher than those with low self-esteem; It was determined that those with a graduate degree had a 2.5-fold effect.
