The examination of primary reading and writing book (2021-2022) by classroom teachers (Denizli case)

Textbooks are the main source of teaching because of their features such as being designed to realize the objectives of the curriculum, providing the course to be implemented in line with a plan, providing cultural transfer, and being economically accessible. The textbooks are prepared in accordance with the content, learning-teaching, measurement and evaluation, language expression and style, technical design and arrangement criteria determined by the Board of Education and Discipline. It is considered important to determine the usability and effectiveness of the textbooks, to identify their deficiencies, and to identify the problems that arise during the practical use of the textbooks. It is even more important to get the opinions of teachers who use the book as it is, in terms of the development of the books. From this point of view, the aim of the study is to examine the primary reading and writing textbook (2021-2022) according to the opinions of elementary school teachers. In this study, which was designed according to the mixed research method, a sample determined by appropriate methods was selected from first grade teachers working in Merkezefendi and Pamukkale central districts of Denizli province, who used the textbook distributed free of charge by the Ministry of National Education in the 2021-2022 academic year. In the quantitative dimension of the research, 121 first grade teachers and in the qualitative dimension 20 first grade teachers were reached, the data were collected according to the questionnaire and interview forms developed by the researcher by taking the opinions of the experts. In the analysis of the quantitative data, the distribution, frequency and percentages of the items were calculated using the SPSS package program, and the content analysis method was used in the qualitative dimension. According to the results of the research, it was found that: the enhancements of the other parts of the textbook with the exception of language, expression and style; the preparation of the texbooks in fasciculte types.; the preparatory studies must be sufficient to be used during the integration week and in accordance with the level of the student; it is necessary to provide digital/online content, concept cards, alphabet blocks, additional resources etc. to be used in educational activities by the Ministry of National Education; the visuals in the book should be used effectively and appropriately; measurement and evaluation activities and self-evaluation studies should be included after the chapter, unit, letter group; the content of the textbook should be enriched (number of questions/activity, assignments, writing area, etc.) and made available for use. According to the results obtained from the research findings, suggestions were made such as designing textbooks in fascicles; presenting the textbooks comprehensively in a type and level that will not lead teachers to additional resources during the preparatory studies, letter teaching and assessment and evaluation stages; presenting digital/online resources, which are widely used today, to the use of teachers and students by the Ministry of National Education; Improving the scope and quality of teacher guidebooks and re-presenting them for use.
