Çankırı Sanjak from the Tanzimat to the First World War (1839-1914)

In this study, the administrative, educational, economic and demographic structure of Çankırı during the 75-year period from Tanzimat to World War I, as well as developments in the field of public works and natural disasters were discussed. In the study, the changes in the administrative structure of Çankırı central and other related districts, the attitudes and appointments of the administrators in the direction of various archival records and primary sources were examined and It was demonstrated how a sanjak was governed in the Ottoman Empire. The Muslim and non-Muslim population of Çankırı and the various groups of immigrants who came to the region have been addressed and some problems have been identified regarding the integration of immigrants with the existing population. The classical and modern educational institutions in Çankırı have been handled in every aspect and various information has been given about teachers and students. The fairgrounds, which are the most important economic and commercial activities in Çankırı, were studied and the sources of underground and above-ground income of the region were investigated and the contribution of the city to the Ottoman economy was determined. Various works in the field of public works have been investigated and the reflections of the institutional modernization in the Ottoman Empire to Çankırı have been determined. Finally, various natural disasters occurred in Çankırı were studied, and the extent to which the public was affected by these disasters and the measures taken by the local and central government were determined and the central government directly assumed the role of social services. It is hoped that this study will contribute to those who research and do the Ottoman city history studies and Çankırı history.
