Abstract (EN)

Terror Management Theory presents two competing hypotheses regarding the effect of mortality salience on political ideology: a shift to a conservative stance and the defense of one's worldview. My research considers how three types of mortality primes, reminders of death due to cancer, a terror attack, and unknown causes, may lead to diverging ideological responses. This can shed light on the conditions under which people respond differently to mortality salience. Based on an online survey experiment (N=2,629) conducted in Turkey in 2018, the reminder of death due to cancer had no significant effect whereas reminders of death due to a terror attack and unknown causes had significant positive effects on conservative self-identification.
