Abstract (EN)

The bond between people and books, which has been going on for centuries, has been one of the important factors affecting the cultural level of that society. It is clear that the human-book relationship not only raises the cultural level of the society, but also provides an intellectual equipment. Therefore, one of the most important ways to touch people's socio-cultural lives is to search for books they are interested in. We tried to learn the cultural level of the Ottoman Society through books and what kind of books they were interested in from the estate records in the Şer'iyye Registers. We tried to see the place of the book culture in the city by researching the books found in 17th century Istanbul in the light of the estate records in the Şer'iyye Registers, where legal documents of people from all walks of life are found. Our goal is "What would a person read?" was to focus on the answer to the question. and to find out the status of book owners. First of all, we made our search according to the estate records in the 17th century Şer'iyye Registers. As a result of our work on the court records in the published volumes, we identified the people whose estates had books. The courts where these estates are located; Bab Court, Eyüp Court, Galata Court, Istanbul Court, Rumeli Court, Ahi Çelebi Court, Beşiktaş Court, Evkaf-ı Hümayun Inspectorate, Evkaf Accountancy, Hasköy Courts and Kısmet-i Military Court. As a result of our research, we scanned 4742 documents from the court records and reached 3533 books from the estates of 129 people. We also researched the subject in depth and benefited from many books, articles, theses and encyclopedic sources. First of all, in the first part of our thesis, we discussed the subject in general and examined the political, social, economic and cultural dimensions of the 17th century. We tried to understand the period by giving information about 17th century Istanbul. In the second part of our thesis, we narrowed down our research area and examined the book culture of Turkish society in general, and accordingly, we discussed the scientific history of the Turks and their relationship with the book. In order to trace the book culture in the Ottoman Empire, we touched upon the writings of travelers, ambassadors and diplomats. Again, within the scope of the subject, we tried to see how books and librarianship developed by referring to the library culture in the Ottoman Empire. We also extensively researched book culture, including second-hand book culture in the Ottoman Empire. In the third part, we have classified and evaluated our archive scans, which is our main subject. We examined the nature of the books we found, which is the main purpose of our thesis research, what kind of books they are, who owns what kind of books, their distribution according to neighborhoods, their distribution according to years, their gender and many other details, and they transferred them to the thesis. We put forward our thesis by reflecting these on tables and graphs and explaining these tables and graphs.
