Political life of Tevfik Ileri (1950-1960)

This research focuses on political activities of Tevfik Ileri who played an active role in Turkish politics between 1950-60. In this context, the introduction of Ileri into political life, his activities and effects, the administrative authorities in which he served and the cases accused to him after the 1960 coup have been examined. In this study historical document analysis technique which is one of the qualitative research methods is used. First- and second-hand sources on the subject matter have been provided and analyzed. İleri elected as Democrat Party MP from Samsun in 1950 elections, served in the Ministries of Transport and National Education, made fundamental reforms in the country's educational policy. these reforms aroused a great impact in the country and at the same time brought the religious-political debates to the line. We also found that İleri's political life in 1954-57 was less influential in politics than in the previous period. Ileri, re-active in Turkey 1957-60's political life, carried out important works to solve the drinking water problem in villages, irrigation problem of agricultural land, road and bridge issues by working at Ministry of Public Works. In addiation he also served as a proxy in the Prime Ministry, Interior and National Education Ministries. After May 27 Coup, İleri was judged as a defendant in various cases such as treason, violation of the constitution, the Inquiry Commission case, the election issue, Ankara-Istanbul events, the malpractice, bribery, favoritism. Tevfik Ileri who was the defender of our national traditions since his youth, attracted attention with his principles and patriotism, subsequently left mark in Turkish history with his actions during his political life. He was sentenced to death and then life imprisonment due to violate the constitution. For all these reasons, this study which deals with Ileri is important.
