Protection of women against violence under Turkish Law and positive obligations of the state

Significant numbers of women around the world are exposed to violence in both public and private spheres. Violence, which is usually committed by private persons, results in severe harm to physical and psychological integrity of women and limits or impedes the ability to exercise their human rights freely and fully. Since the Republic of Turkey is a State governed by rule of law, respecting human rights, it is the duty of the State to recognize and protect human rights. With respect to this duty the State is obliged to protect women against violence regarding national and international regulations. The aim of this study is to examine the content and scope of the State's obligations and to express views and criticism on how women should be protected against violence more effectively.
