Politeness in Turkish theatrical plays

This study is based on Brown and Levinson's Politeness Theory and this theory is evaluated in terms of Turkish. For this purpose, five dramas from the Republican Period of Turkish theater were selected and the samples in the database were compiled by scanning these dramas. Therefore, the examples in the database of this study consist of written fictional verbal language usage. The texts scanned in the study are Oğuz ATAY's Oyunlarla Yaşayanlar, Cevat Fehmi BAŞKUT's Paydos, Memet BAYDUR's Yangın Yerinde Orkideler, Tuncer CÜCENOĞLU's Boyacı and Güngör DİLMEN's Hakimiyet-i Milliye Aşevi. The data obtained from the texts of our study is thought to be hosting the properties of politeness theory in Turkish that can be examined and to be in the context that would achieve the objectives of the study. In the introductory part, after giving information about the subject, aim, importance, assumptions and limitations of the study and some terms used in the study, theoretical explanations are made in the second part. In the third part, the method of the research, the sample of the research universe and the tools used in data collection are given. In the fourth part, negative and positive politeness are classified on the basis of Turkish. The data obtained from the theater texts were examined and explained within the scope of this classification. The study was completed by interpreting the findings and sharing the results.
