ABSTRACT AIM: In this study, we investigated the relationship between body anthropometric measurements and metabolic parameters in healthy adult men and women withaut any disease or history of medicine intake. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A total of 199 subjects, whose ages ranged from 20 to 73, were included into the study: 113 men (meam age ; 36,5 ± 11,3) and 86 women (mean age ;33,8 ± 11,7). Age, height, weight, blood pressure, pulse count were determined, and anthropometric measurements such as waist circumference, body mass index (BMI), waist- hip ratio (WHR), hip circumference, neck circumference, skin fold thickness (biceps, triceps, subscapularis, suprailiac) check were performed. Fasting blood sugar and insulin levels were determined. Insulin resistance was evaluated by Homeostasis Model Assessment (HOMA- IR). Total-cholesterol, trigliserid, LDL-cholesterol and HDL-cholesterollevels were also calculated. Body fat mass measured by bioelectric impedance method. Correlation and t- test were applied to the obtained parameters. FINDINGS: Of women, 47,7% were obese and 1,2% morbid obese while 59,3% of men were obese. The correlation between waist circumference and systolic pressure (r=0,426, p<0,001), diastolic blood pressure (i=0,414, p<0,001), total-cholesterol (r=0,450, p<0,001), trigliserid (r=0,556, p<0,001), LDL-cholesterol (r=0,486, p<0,001) was found to be positive, whereas the correlation between waist circumference and HDL-cholesterol (r=0,261*, p<0,001) was negatife. These sorrelations were stronger than all the other anthropometric measurements. In women, the relationship between BMI and HOMA-IR (R=0,415, P<0,001) was found to be more significant than that between waist circumference and insulin resistance (r=0,333, p=0,02). In men, however, we observed,. a«positi¥,e~ correlation JDetvveen waist circumference and HOMA-IR (r=0,271, p=0,04), while we could not determine any significant correlation between BMI and HOMA-IR. Neck circumference was found to have a significant correlation (p<0,001) with body weight (r=0,760), waist circumference (r=0,732), hip circumference (r=0,626), waist-hip ratio (0,588), total cholesterol (r=0,534), hip circumference (r=0,626), LDL-cholesterol (r=0,406), WHR (R=0,568), systolic blood pressure (r=0,260), diastolic blood pressure (r=0,290) and with glucose (r=0,280). The relationship between skin fold thickness and body fat mass (r=0,736, p<0,001) and lipid 51parameters (r=0,412, p<0,001) was more significant in men with respect to that between body fat mass (r=0,694, p<0,001) and lipid parameters (r=0,329,p=0,03) in women. In conclusion; 1- Obesity can lead to blood pressure increase, dislipidemia and insulin resistance. 2- There is a correlation between dislipidemia and BMI, waist circumference, neck circumference and skin fold, which determines obesity characteristics. The relationship between waist circumference and metabolic parameters was found to be more significant. 3- Neck circumference measurement, which is relatively a new obesity indication, can be used an obesity assessment method. 52
