The study is of cross-sectional descriptive type and its sample consisted of 192 elderly people living alone who applied to a state hospital emergency department between June and September 2022. Elderly introduction and recreational activities determination form and geriatric depression scale (GDS) short form were used. Ordinal logistic regression, mean comparison tests, correlation analysis were applied. The mean age of the participants was 76.23±7.24 and the mean GDS score was 7.51±4.47. The risk of depression was found to be %69.8. According to the mean comparison tests, the recreational activities (home activities, participation to outside activities, seeing family members, social relationships, good feeling occupations and physical activity) in the lives of the participants were found to have a statistically significant effect on the GDS scores (p<0,05). It was observed that there was a weak positive correlation between the frequency of admission to the emergency department in the last 6 months and GDS (p<0,05). According to the results of the ordinal logistic regression analysis; There was a significant effect on the number of medications, the number of children, telephone use, cancer, and the frequency of going to the emergency department in the last 6 months (p<0,05). As a result, it's seen that the increase of recreational activities decrease the frequency of applications to emergency services and level of depression for old people.
