The effect of moulage on providing reality in wound care education

Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the effect of moulage use in developing wound care skills in nursing students. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out with 2nd year students of Manisa Celal Bayar University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing, between October 2021 and January 2022. The universe of the study consisted of 104 students who were not enrolled in the 2nd Class Surgical Diseases Nursing course in the nursing department of the faculty in the Fall Semester of the 2021-2022 Academic Year. 92 students who met the inclusion criteria were included in the study, the study was completed with 46 students in the intervention group and 46 students in the control group. After the theoretical training on wound care was given to both groups, they were given wound care application training by using moulage in the intervention group and simple task instructive models in the control group. "Wound Care Information Form", "Wound Care and Dressing Skill Form", "Student Satisfaction and Self-Confidence Scale in Learning" and "Simulation Design Scale" were used in the study Results: In the study, 82.6% of the students in the intervention group were female, their mean age was 20.09±0.96, and 39.1% of them voluntarily chose the nursing profession; It was determined that 87% of the students in the control group were female, their mean age was 19.54±0.72, and 41.3% of them chose the nursing profession willingly. According to research findings, it was determined that the difference between the pretest and posttest scores of the wound care knowledge score was statistically significant, and the posttest scores were higher. In the study, the wound care and dressing skill scores of the students in the intervention group were found to be higher than the scores of the students in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (p<0.05). It was determined that the students in the intervention group had higher mean scores for both scales and sub-dimensions used in the study, and the difference was statistically significant. Conclusion: It was found that, moulage application made a positive contribution to the wound care skill scores of the students, the student satisfaction and self-confidence scores, and the simulation design.
