The impact of the trade war between the US and China on the sub-Saharan African countries: A CGE GTAP model approach

This study examines the impact of the trade war between the US and China on the trade and economies of the SSA countries. Using social accounting matrix data from the GTAP database, the study employs a Computable General Equilibrium model (CGE), specifically the GTAP model, to run the simulations on the effects of the tariff changes between the US and China on the SSA regions. The results show that the trade war negatively affects both the US and China, creating opportunities through trade creation and diversion effects to the SSA countries. SSA is positively affected by the trade war in all tariff scenarios. East Africa and ROEA regions gain more than the other SSA regions. The sectorial results show that all sectors in the SSA encounter positive effects except the minerals and metal sector in East Africa and ROEA. The findings provide valuable insights for companies, consumers, and policymakers in the SSA countries. The trade war increased the ability of the companies to produce efficiently and meet the needs of consumers while maximizing their profit through the welfare allocative effects. The trade diversion from the US and China increased imports in the SSA regions, raising the availability of goods to meet customer needs. Policymakers may take measures to empower firms in the SSA to take more advantage of international trade-related activities. Key Words: China, Computable General Equilibrium Model (CGE), Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP), Sub-Saharan Africa, Trade war, United States.

A machine learning approach to predicting customer churn in the banking industry using CRISP-DM and KNIME analytics

Attracting new customers is more expensive than maintaining the existing ones. One way of preventing customers from churning is to develop techniques for predicting their likelihood to churn. This study aims to forecast the customer churn of a multinational bank by using one-month period data, from July 31, 2022, to August 29, 2022. We employed CRISPM-DM, in conjunction with KNIME Analytics, to build several predictive models, i.e., decision tree, random forest, logistic regression, artificial neural networks, support vector machine, and ensemble models to predict customer churn. The results show that the random forest model has the highest performance in accurately predicting the churn of bank clients by its high overall accuracy of 78.91% and AUC score of 85.3%. The decision tree model, with an overall accuracy of 71.55%, and the logistic regression model, with an overall accuracy of 71.3%, are the least-performing predictive models. The findings also show that the customer's historical record with the bank (product_number), credit score, and age have the highest predictive power for customer churn. This study offers valuable insights for financial institutions. Using reliable predictive models, banks may identify potential clients likely to switch to other financial institutions. This identification would allow banks to design innovative marketing strategies and powerful customer relationship management to prevent consumers from churning.

The analysis of the flight dispatcher's workload in the Turkish aviation industry

This study aims to focus on the increased costs related to the workload of flight dispatchers in the aviation industry, and on the air traffic flow management (ATFM) delays that constitute a significant part of the operational costs in the airlines. Inspired by the conceptual framework of De Cauwer's Temporal Bin Packing Problem, we use flight data of an anonymous Turkish airline company from June to August 2022 on flights to West Europe, Central Europe, and Great Britain, as these regions experience high rates of ATFM delays. The year 2022, considered a part of the post-pandemic period, witnessed significant international events, like the closure of Ukraine's airspace, that have affected air traffic between Turkey and Europe, creating new challenges and opportunities for flight dispatchers and airlines. The findings show that applying the workload metrics of the off-season to the high season generates net savings of 6940,800 in the ATFM delay costs. The results provide valuable insights for the airlines to enhance operational efficiency, reduce costs, and develop efficient strategies. Keywords: Air Traffic Flow Management, Flight Dispatcher, Turkish Aviation.

Do mobile money savings play a moderating role for financial inclusion in Ghana?

In recent years, financial inclusion has become one of the main concern for policy makers especially in emerging markets across the world. Researchers have expressed different opinions on the most effective way to achieve this goal. In this regard, one tool thus far, that has proven to be effective is mobile money for which African region leads the world. This study investigates the impact of mobile money on the savings behavior of users in Ghana in the light of the Life-Cycle-Hypothesis. Originality: Most studies in this field are based on the Technology Adoption Model (TAM) or its variants. We deviate from this approach to explore specifically the factors that influence the savings behaviour of mobile money users and the extent to which it helps people to save by conducting a questionnaire. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study of this nature held for a West African country. Findings: The findings of the study reveal that mobile money has significant influence on the savings behavior of users in Ghana. The results also show that demographic attributes such as age, marital status, risk aversion, as well as the availability (access to) of formal financial institutions and products are the major drivers of savings behavior of mobile money users in Ghana. Practical Implications: The findings of the study will be of significant use to policy makers who seek to increase economic growth through financial inclusion. It will also serve as a guide to regulators of financial institutions and mobile network operators to create a fair level playing field to enable more people to reach financial services in a an easier and convenient way. Exploring the impact of socio-political crises on the operational performance of the Turkish Airlines

This study investigates the impacts of socio-political events on the operational performance of the Turkish Airlines, by referring to the firm-specific factorsi.e. available seat kilometers (ASK), revenue per kilometer (RPK), passenger load factor (PLF) and passenger carried (PC) over the period of 2010M1-2018M12. To conduct the study, we selected four critical events among many others that had a serious impact on the Turkish socio-political environment. These events, by chronological orders, are; Gezi Park, the shooting of the Russian military jet, the attempted military coup and electronic devices ban. To detect the outlier impact, we run four different outlier algorithms, namely outlier detection algorithm (ODA), breakout detection algorithm (BDA), change-point algorithm (CPA) and causal impact analysis on a regional basis. The findings suggest that the socio-political crises have changing impacts on the operational performance of the Turkish Airlines regionally. CPA successfully detected the Gezi Park in domestic, Africa and North America regions for RPK and in domestic, Europe, Far East, and North America regions for ASK. ODA detected an outlier impact in Africa and North America for RPK and ASK for the shooting of the Russian military jet. ODA had an outlier impact in Europe, the Middle East, and North America regions for the attempted military coup. Finally, for the electronic devices ban while ODA successfully detects an outlier effect in domestic, North and South America regions, CPA reveals an impact in Africa, Far East, and South America for RPK. The impact of the crises in PLF has been less visible. These findings show that although the crises had an immediate effect on the operational performance, Turkish Airlines recovered from each crisis very promptly. This proves the resilience and agile management ability of the company. Keywords: Causal impact, Operating Performance, Outlier Detection Analysis, SocioPolitical Crises, Turkish Airlines

Sustainability in full service carriers and low cost carriers: A comparison of the Turkish Airlines and Pegasus Airlines

Sustainability is important in aviation industry due to its continuous growth and the use of finite natural resources. Thus, airline companies should implement sustainable business strategies to reduce detrimental environmental and social effects. Strategies in technological improvements may be strong solutions to improve sustainability. These include environmental-friendly aircraft design, use of alternative fuels, low emission engine design, advanced air traffic management procedures. This study explores how two airline carrier types, Turkish Airlines, a Full Service Carrier (FSC), Pegasus Airlines, a Low Cost Carrier, have addressed sustainability in their business models. The results reveal that Turkish Airlines and Pegasus are both doing well in the strategic integration of sustainability due to their large investments in fleet renewal and advancements, which reduce fuel consumption and emissions. While Turkish Airlines follows publicly available policies and publish sustainability reports disclosing the progresses, Pegasus Airlines is not successful in addressing and communicating its sustainability activities to the shareholders and stakeholders. Thus, as a FSC Turkish Airlines' strategies leans more strongly towards sustainability than Pegasus Airlines.

The impact of board characteristics on corporate social responsibility performance of companies: Evidence from emerging markets

The board characteristics have important impacts on corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance of companies, particularly in emerging markets. This study investigates the effects of five board attributes, i.e. board independence, gender diversity, cultural diversity, board activity, board member' compensation, on the CSR performance of 1,191 publicly listed non-financial companies operating in 23 emerging countries over the period 2010-2019. We use a variety of ESG performance scores derived from Thomson Reuters Eikon database to measure the CSR and we employed panel regression models to conduct the analysis. The results show that the greater presence of independent board members and women on boards are significantly and positively associated with CSR performance and decrease ESG controversies. The findings also provide evidence that board member's compensation has a positive and significant impact on CSR performance. Thus, company management in emerging countries should be more conscious in structuring their corporate boards to enhance sustainability performance for the long-term success in improving their reputation and meeting the expectations of stakeholders. The impact of renewable energy performance on corporate financial performance

This study investigates the effect of renewable energy performance (REP) on corporate financial performance (CFP) taking into account renewable energy (RE) related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Environment, Social, Governance (ESG) factors. We conduct the study by using a data sample of 563 companies from 46 countries over the period of 2009-2018. We employ panel data analysis on firm-level and on the country of headquarters. We cover the 7th and 12th SDGs, and environmental ESG variables to assess the impact of REP on CFP. The results suggest that the effectiveness of REP could be measured by three phases: policies adopted, targets established, and actions implemented. The findings indicate that there is a negative impact of REP policies and targets on profitability in developed markets due to the massive costs incurred by the companies. However, the impact is positive and significant in developing countries, particularly in long-term financial performance since they are at the beginning of the implementation process. On firm-level, RE policies negatively affect both financial and non-financial companies, while RE actions have a positive and significant influence on non-financial companies rather than on financial ones. The results also reveal that the 7th SDG has a negative effect on the financial performance of companies on both country of headquarter-level and firm-level, while the 12th SDG has a positive and significant effect on both country of headquarter-level and firm-level financial performance. Finally, the environmental factors of ESG have a negative impact on the financial performance of companies on both country of headquarter-level and firm-level. The relationship between demographic board diversity and dividend policy: Empirical evidence from Turkey

This study investigates the impact of demographic board diversity attributes, i.e., gender, nationality, experience, educational level, tenure, and age, on dividend policy of 67 non-financial companies listed on Borsa Istanbul 100 index from 2013 to 2018. It also assumes the composite of all diversity attributes to create a demographic board diversity index (DBDI) for cognitive diversity. The study uses alternative dividend policy measures to conduct the analysis, i.e., the probability of paying dividends, dividend payout, and dividend yield through logit, probit, and Tobit regression models. The findings indicate that diversity in experience, educational background, and tenure among the board members play a critical role in encouraging companies to pay a high dividend. In contrast, diversity in gender, nationality, and age is insignificant in influencing dividend payments. Furthermore, the DBDI positively affects the companies in formulating their dividend policies. These results offer valuable insights for companies and policymakers to develop a governance structure accommodating demographic board diversity attributes among board members to mitigate conflicts between controlling and minority shareholders through effective dividend policies and sustainable corporate performance.

Examining the causes and effects of flight attendant fatigue

The scope of civil aviation operations has increased rapidly in recent years. This growth has also raised the expectations from flight attendants. The duties of cabin crews have diversified and created several challenges including longer duty days, consecutive working days, heavy workload. Hence, flight attendants have become subject to physical and mental fatigue due to irregular sleep, inadequate rest time, and long working hours. This study investigates the causes and effects of fatigue among flight attendants of a Turkish airline company through a self-administrated questionnaire. A structured survey was developed and run online to 152 flight attendants. It collected data on demographics, sleep quality, fatigue experience, causes and effects of fatigue, and fatigue management strategies. The results show that almost all participants experience sleep-related issues. The findings indicate that the majority of the flight attendants have trouble falling asleep before flight duty. The sleep duration before night flights and during layovers with minimum rest time is dramatically low. Moreover, a significant number of flight attendants have admitted having nodded-off unwillingly during flight. The results also reveal that factors related to scheduling - i.e., layovers with minimum rest time, long duty days, night flights, consecutive working days and 4-legged flight duty play an important role in causing fatigue. Hence, scheduling should be improved. In balancing work and social life, men struggle more than women and married flight attendants have more difficulty than single ones. Also, the sleep duration before night flights is strikingly low in younger cabin crews than their older colleagues. The immune system of the majority of the flight attendants is negatively affected due to working conditions. These findings provide valuable insights for airline companies and policymakers to seriously manage fatigue related factors to ensure the security and safety of airline operations and the well-being of flight attendants.

This study evaluates the operational efficiency of the airports under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) contracts in Kazakhstan. With the increasing global adoption of PPP models in airport management, Kazakhstan has implemented this approach to modernize its infrastructure, attract new investment and improve service quality. Using a combination of data envelopment analysis and qualitative analysis, this study compares the efficiency of the airports managed under PPP framework with those managed under public ownership. The results indicate that PPPs can lead to significant improvements in operational efficiency, infrastructure investment, and user satisfaction when it is properly structured and regulated in a transparent way. The findings also suggest that PPP-managed airports demonstrate improved efficiency, though challenges remain in regulatory oversight, risk-sharing, and alignment of the public and private interests. The study provides valuable insights for policymakers to enhance the effectiveness of PPPs in Kazakhstan's aviation sector and other emerging markets pursuing similar models.
