In this thesis, the problems of modulation classification and space time block code (STBC) classification for MIMO systems are investigated. Two existing MIMO modulation type classification algorithms, an average likelihood ratio test, which is optimal in Bayesian sense, and a suboptimal Hybrid Likelihood ratio test, are investigated in detail. Subsequently, we have focused on improving these existing algorithms by using blind channel estimation methods with better performance, such as the Expectation–Maximization algorithm for spatial multiplexing which is known to converge to the maximum likelihood estimate, and a higher order statistic based estimation method in the case of signals which use space time block codes. Subsequently, we have proposed a novel approach for the task of modulation and STBC type classification, in which these two classification problems are considered as a single as joint classification problem, in contrast to the existing works in the literature. Based on this joint classification approach, we have proposed novel likelihood based joint STBC and modulation-type classification algorithms for 2 and 3 antenna cases.
Linear interference alignment in cognitive radio networks
Multi-input multi output (MIMO) systems are still developing via substantial research effort in the literature and leading telecommunication industry. MIMO communications that is a solution as countering fading and deep fade effect in wireless communication, presents spatial diversity of the system and increases data rates. Yet, the effective operation of MIMO systems depends on the design of the pre-coding and post-coding matrices. Cognitive radio networks, which have been proposed for a long time in the literature, are still being developed. The communication of two different types of users is achieved on the principle that they are based on the use of different kinds of techniques as a solution to the spectrum scarcity. Primary users are allocated as licensed users, besides secondary users are considered as unlicensed users in cognitive radio networks. Overlay, underlay and interweave techniques are among the outstanding techniques in the literature. It is essential to minimize interference components that occur between the primary users and the secondary users so that these techniques can work effectively. Interference alignment (IA) is a remedy for eliminating interference components due to the interference channel in MIMO networks. There are many variants for IA in the literature and linear interference alignment technique is the most frequently used due to its applicable approach. In the IA method using the MIMO network structure, the interference components are aligned in a specific direction by using the precoding and interference suppression matrices. However, the destruction of these interference components is accompanied by operative signal processing implementation. Additionally, IA technique has also known harmonious structure for CR networks. In this thesis, the interference alignment performance of a MIMO CR network is examined in the presence of multiple secondary users. In the proposed architecture, it is assumed that linear IA is used at the primary system to alleviate the interference between primary and secondary networks. Although linear IA can surpass the interference in CR considerably, interference leakages may occur due to fast fading channel. Herein, we derive the closed-form outage probability expression considering the interference leakage occurred in the primary system. The results which are validated with Monte-Carlo simulations show that interference leakages can deteriorate both system performance and diversity gains considerably. Furthermore, precoder and interference suppression matrix design is covered using the IA technique with MIMO zero-forcing receiver structure. Precoder and interference suppression matrix is designed considering the presence of a single primary user and two secondary users in the wireless environment. Sum rate performances and bit error rate performances are presented for both primary users and secondary users with respect to the number of antennas and distance.
Sixth-generation networks backhaul through optical free space
In the following research, the sixth-generation networks and the possibility of using FSO technologies in backhaul mobile networks in terms of advantages, types, and disadvantages were discussed and studied. wireless optical communications are introduced as a suggested replacement for optical connections and radio frequencies. OWC system analysis models are proposed in association with climatically variable settings. The recommended site connects the continents of Asia and Europe via Istanbul, where the system was evaluated using the Gamma-Gamma model as a probablity model for predicting different forms of weather turbulence. The results of the analysis of weather data for the region and geographic location indicate that the connection can be made for most of the year. An overview was provided to exhibit the most important aspects of the research conducted for this thesis. We were able to provide context for our investigation by focusing on the need for 6G standards types, characteristics, and historical overview of OWC and its comparison with radio frequencies, and an in-depth look at how FSO technology may be used to meet these needs. following that, we analyzed the primary restrictions confronting FSO researchers who are striving to assess the feasibility, reliability, and efficiency of adopting optical wireless communication. Finally, we spoke about the most recent developments in this technology and the firms that are now engaged in developing it. Next, the most important theories utilized in the study of FSO systems, including the Gamma-Gamma Model, Negative Exponential Model, K-distribution, and Lognormal Model, were discussed (refractive index structure, Scintillation Index) finally an equation was developed. for estimating communication quality, which is based on the attenuations estimated in response to local weather conditions including fog, snow, rain, and smoke. This equation is used to determine the quality of the FSO link's communication by investigating and figuring out what kind of network may be set up in response to a certain weather trend. Then, the characteristics of the system (C_n^2 & SI) were reviewed, where the weather turbulence was from weak to strong, as well as variations from weak to saturated according to weather conditions throughout the year in the link region. The variables' values were strongly influenced by the ambient temperature, where the turbulence was weak to moderate at the lowest temperatures, in contrast to the values recorded at the highest temperatures, in which the turbulence was strong with fluctuations from strong to saturate. All three of these weather phenomena (rain, snow, and fog) were taken into account in the gamma-gamma model selection process. There were also system losses due to attenuations (molecular and geometric), where geometric attenuation was most detrimental to the transmission of information. For the abovementioned reasons, the value was lowered by less than 10 dB by affecting variables; the width of the beam is 1 mrad and the capture area is 0.2 m. The link margin remained steady throughout the year, notably during the time of snow cessation from April to November.
Designing an effective MIMO antenna for 5G
Since today's smartphones need high frequencies and a broad bandwidth, the development of 5G communication technology is being heralded as a revolutionary step in the field of wireless communication. But since high frequencies are inversely related to wavelengths, as they spread, they will experience dispersion because of this relationship. This problem may be solved by combining the capabilities of 5G technology with those of systems that use the Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) protocol. The purpose of this thesis is to develop and conduct research on a hexagonal MIMO system with the intention of enabling smartphones to operate across a broad spectrum of 5G sub-GHz frequencies (mid-bands). In this thesis, two antennas are planned to be constructed on the same FR-4 substrate. The substrate has a thickness of 1.6 mm, a permittivity of 4.3, and a loss tangent of 0.02. In addition, each of the suggested antennas makes use of a ground plane that has been altered, and the microstrip line feed 50 is the form of feeding that is used to excite those antennas. Computer Simulation Technology (CST) studio version 2020 is used for the design and simulation of each and every model that is being offered. According to the findings, the frequency range that can be covered by the first model's operating frequency is between 0 and 16 GHz with return losses of S11 that are lower than -10 dB. While the second variant can accommodate frequencies ranging from 0 to 16 GHz with return losses of -10 dB.
Investigating the bit error rate performance of the mimo-noma network with majority-based TAS/MRC scheme
This thesis focuses on examining the performance of downlink MIMO-NOMA networks using the TAS-maj/MRC technique. It addresses the limitations of previous studies and explores the advantages of combining NOMA and MIMO technologies. Previous research has mainly focused on evaluating SISO NOMA networks and has overlooked the error rate performance of MIMO-NOMA systems. Finding an optimal transmit AS solution remains a challenge in NOMA networks. To overcome these limitations, this thesis makes significant contributions. Firstly, it investigates the bit error rate (BER) performance of the downlink MIMO-NOMA network with the TAS-maj/MRC scheme under the Nakagami-m fading channel model. By considering the Nakagami-m fading model, which better represents real-world fading channel conditions, a more accurate assessment is achieved. The thesis provides an exact closed-form expression for the BER, offering insights into the system's performance. Additionally, asymptotic analysis is conducted in high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regions to evaluate the diversity and array gains achieved by the TAS-maj/MRC scheme. This analysis enhances our understanding of the system's behavior and the benefits of employing the TAS-maj/MRC scheme in MIMO-NOMA networks. Theoretical results are validated through extensive Monte Carlo simulations, demonstrating significant BER improvements with increasing receive antennas and improved channel conditions. The research findings contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the BER performance of MIMO-NOMA systems with the TAS-maj/MRC scheme under various channel conditions. This understanding is valuable for the design and optimization of practical wireless communication applications. By identifying the limitations of MIMO-NOMA systems and proposing strategies to enhance their performance, this research aims to advance wireless communication systems. The thesis structure is as follows: Chapter 1 provides an overview of OMA radio access techniques, introduces NOMA concepts in downlink and uplink networks, and discusses the emergence of MIMO-NOMA systems. Chapter 2 presents a literature review, analyzing previous research on MIMO-NOMA systems, emphasizing the need to investigate the error rate performance. Chapter 3 describes the theoretical framework of the MIMO-NOMA system with the TAS-maj/MRC scheme, including the Nakagami-m fading channel model, transmit AS schemes, and MRC on the receiver side. The derivation of the closed-form expression for the BER is explained in detail. Chapter 4 presents simulation results and analyzes the BER performance under different channel conditions. Various parameters, such as receive antennas and channel conditions, are examined through Monte-Carlo simulations, confirming the improvements in BER performance and validating the theoretical findings. Finally, We summarize the research findings, discuss the study's contributions, and suggest directions for future research. The summary highlights the significance of this research in bridging the gap between NOMA and MIMO technologies, exploring the benefits of the TAS-maj/MRC scheme in MIMO-NOMA networks, and providing insights into the system's behavior under different channel conditions.
Channel selection and assignment schemes for efficient spectrum sharing and energy efficiency in cognitive radio networks
In this thesis, we focus on distributed channel selection and centralized channel assignment in cognitive radio networks (CRN). For the former topic, we are concerned with the efficiency of spectrum sharing whereas in the latter, we also aim to improve energy efficiency of the CRN. First, we propose a non-selfish distributed channel selection scheme which improves the efficiency of spectrum sharing by mitigating thespectrum fragmentation. We also present an analytical model for our proposal using Continuous Time Markov Chains. In this thesis, we also devise various centralized channel assignment algorithms that outperform pure opportunistic schedulers in terms of energy efficiency and fairness notion without significantly trading off throughput efficiency. Initially, we consider a CRN which acquires channel occupancy informationfrom a white space database. We develop heuristic algorithms considering transmission, idling and channel switching periods in both contiguous and fragmented spectrum. Finally,we consider a CRN in which CRs apply a listen-before-talk access approach. Different from our previous proposal, this scheduler ensures that interference caused by CRs does not exceed the tolerable limits in any of the primary user (PU) channels. In addition, it considers the differences among the PU channels in terms of probabilityof being idle as well as the control messaging overhead in downlink and uplink. Considering the tradeoff between the scheduling overhead and PU interference probability,we identify the frame length achieving high throughput. Simulation results show that our proposal achieves high throughput performance comparable to a throughput maximizing scheduler but it consumes lower energy than the latter.
Cooperative spectrum sensing and radio environment map construction in cognitive radio networks
In this thesis, we focus on both internal and external sensing in Cognitive Radio (CR) networks. In internal sensing, individual CRs discover spectrum opportunities via spectrum sensing whereas in external sensing, an external entity provides the spectrum occupancy and related information. For the first, we propose a novel cooperative spectrum sensing scheme, Uniform Quantization-based Cooperative Sensing(UniQCS) that uses uniform quantization and an effective fusion strategy. Numerical results demonstrate that under imperfect reporting channel and false reports, UniQCSperforms better than hard decision algorithms such as Majority and M-of-N in terms of probability of detection and false alarm at the expense of a marginal increase in overheadbits. We demonstrate that the performance of UniQCS is very close to that of equal gain combiner, which constitutes the upper bound for the decision performance. Due to the challenges in internal sensing, external sensing recently has gained noticeable interest. In external sensing, CRs access spectrum through geolocation databases, which keep relatively static information. Radio Environment Map (REM) is a kindof improved geolocation database and an emerging topic with the latest regulations on TV white space communications. It constructs a signal power temperature map of the CR operation area via processing spectrum measurements collected from sensors dynamically. In this thesis, transmitter LocatIon Estimation based (LIvE) REM construction technique is proposed and compared with the well-known REM construction techniques in shadow and multipath fading channels. The simulation results suggest that the LIvE REM construction outperforms the compared methods in terms of root mean square error and correct detection zone ratio.
Energy-efficient routing for wireless sensor networks with a mobile sink
The concentration of data traffic towards the sink in a wireless sensor network causes the nearby nodes to deplete their batteries quicker than other nodes, which leaves the sink stranded and disrupts the sensor data reporting. To mitigate this problem the usage of mobile sinks is proposed. Mobile sinks implicitly provide load-balancing and help achieving uniform energy-consumption across the network. However, adver- tising the location of the mobile sink to the network introduces an overhead in terms of energy consumption and packet delays. In this thesis, we propose a new routing protocol, Ring Routing, which aims to minimize this overhead while preserving the advantages of mobile sinks. It is a distributed, energy-efficient mobile sink routing protocol that minimizes data reporting delays, and hence is suitable for real-time ap- plications. We evaluate the performance of Ring Routing via extensive simulations conducted in OPNET.
Spectrum aware self-organizing networking in ofdma/lte heterogeneous networks
Emerging information technologies provide a large number of services which requirehigh throughput for the users. In order to supply the data rate needed by the consumer, the evolving ecosystem of mobile technologies have been shifting from coverageto capacity era. Needs of higher capacity can be achieved by small cell approach thatprovides good indoor coverage for video and high speed data services. Whilst CellularNetwork Architecture is shifting from Circuit-Switched mode to Packet-Switched mode, small cells have begun to adapt this evolution earlier since they use the largest packetnetwork, \the Internet", as a backhaul, that is why they perfectly t in the packet orientedarchitecture and they are inevitable in Long Term Evolution (LTE). Deploymentof small cells requires exible and dynamic operation, administration, maintenanceand provisioning schemes. Self-organization and self-optimization of network elementsemerge as a necessity for network management. Hence, using Self-Organizing Networks(SON) algorithms and techniques in LTE small cells is a key issue; in this study we aregoing to discuss the impact of SON in performance of LTE small cells after reviewingthe principles of the topic
Full-duplex wireless communication systems: Design and performance analyses
Full-Duplex (FD) communications allows receiving and transmitting the signal at the same time interval using the same frequency band, hence it theoretically doubles the capacity, improves the spectral efficiency and reduces end-to-end delay with respect to the conventional half-duplex (HD) communications. Although FD transmission causes strong loop-interference (LI) at the receive antenna, the recent developments on antenna technology and signal processing techniques make it feasible by applying LI cancellation techniques. According to the experimental and theoretical studies in the literature, FD transmission can outperform its counterpart HD transmission, even though the LI cannot be removed completely. Hence, FD communications has recently gained great attention as a potential candidate technology for the next generation wireless communication systems. In this thesis, a variety of wireless communication systems using FD transmission are designed and analyzed. The outage probability or bit error rate (BER) expressions of the proposed systems are analytically derived. The accuracy of the theoretical analyses for each system is verified by several Monte Carlo type computer simulation results.
Design and performance analysis of diversity schemes for spatial modulation and space shift keying systems
Novel single radio-frequency (RF) chain spatial modulation (SM) and space shift keying (SSK) systems are proposed as an alternative to conventional multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In this thesis work, advanced SM/SSK systems are proposed and the performance of these systems is investigated and the advantages against the conventional MIMO systems are demonstrated. In this study, at first, the outage performance of point-to-point MIMO scheme combining SM with transmit antenna selection (TAS) is investigated in Nakagami-m channels for arbitrary m values. In this scheme, transmit antennas which maximize capacity of the system are selected for transmission and then SM is applied by using the selected transmit antennas. For this system, probability density function (PDF) of the received signal-to-noise ratio is derived and then, a closed-form expression for the outage probability of the system is derived by using this PDF. The asymptotic diversity analysis is also performed to demonstrate the achieved diversity order of the system. It is shown that outage performance of the system is improved when fading parameter m and/or number of transmit antennas increase. The derived analytical results are validated by Monte Carlo simulations. Besides the investigation of SM with TAS in Nakagami-m fading channels, due to its simplicity, good performance and low complexity, SSK is considered in the proposed schemes at the rest of the thesis. In this context, cooperative MIMO schemes combining SSK with TAS and relay selection, respectively, are proposed. In the cooperative MIMO scheme combining SSK with TAS, source transmit antennas are selected based on the Euclidean distances between source and destination channel fading coefficients. SSK is applied by using the selected transmit antennas. Besides the direct link transmission between source and destination, the relays which decode the signal transmitted from the source correctly, take part in the transmission. Exact expression and tight lower bound for symbol error rate (SER) of the proposed SSK system with TAS and cooperative relays are derived when the number of selected antennas is two and an arbitrary integer power of two, respectively. Moreover, an asymptotic diversity analysis for SER of the system is also performed to demonstrate the achievable diversity order of the system. It is shown that the proposed SSK system with TAS outperforms SSK system without TAS. It is also indicated that the proposed SSK system with TAS outperforms the conventional MIMO system, which employs antenna selection at source, for high data rates and sufficient number of receive antennas. On the other hand, in the cooperative MIMO scheme combining SSK with relay selection, SSK transmission is considered by using the source transmit antennas. In addition to the direct link transmission, a relay, which is selected according to partial relay selection technique, amplifies the data received from the source and forwards it to the destination. An exact and considerably accurate upper-bound expression for the average error probability of the proposed cooperative SSK system with relay selection are derived when the number of source transmit antennas is equal to two and an arbitrary integer power of two, respectively. An asymptotic diversity analysis is also performed to demonstrate the achievable diversity orders of the systems. It is shown that the proposed SSK system with partial relay selection outperforms the conventional cooperative single-input multiple-output (SIMO) system with partial relay selection. At the last chapter of the thesis, the performance of SSK modulation in multi-hop relay networks is investigated. In this context, the SSK is studied in three different multi-hop relay schemes. In the first scheme, a multi-hop multi-branch SSK system with amplify-and-forward (AF) cooperative relays is proposed. A MIMO scheme, in which source and destination are equip with multiple transmit and receive antennas, respectively, is considered. In this scheme, SSK is applied using the source transmit antennas and the single-antenna AF relays are used to amplify and forward the transmitted signals from the source to the destination in each hop of each branch. A considerably accurate lower-bound expression on the pairwise error probability of multi-hop single-branch SSK system and approximate expression on the bit error probability of multi-hop multi-branch SSK system are derived for the cases that numbers of transmit antennas are two and an arbitrary positive integer power of two at the source, respectively. It is shown that the proposed SSK system outperforms the classical single-input multiple-output systems for especially high data rates. The derived analytical results are validated by computer simulations. In the second scheme, SER analysis is performed for multi-hop SSK system with TAS. In this scheme, SSK is applied on the selected antennas at each hop. It is assumed that there is no line of sight transmission between source and destination and each receiving terminal decodes and forwards its received signal and maps the decided information bits to the selected antennas according to SSK modulation. For the proposed system, approximate and asymptotic SER expressions are derived and the theoretical results are verified by computer simulations. It is shown that the proposed system provides better error performance than the multi-hop SSK system without TAS, and it is also indicated that the proposed system outperforms conventional M-QAM system for especially high data rates and sufficient number of receive antennas at the destination. Finally, in the third scheme, a multi-hop decode-and-forward SSK system with path selection is proposed. In this scheme, the best path is selected among available multiple branches and source communicates with destination hop by hop through the relays of the selected path. SSK is applied by using source's and the relays' transmit antennas. Closed-form approximate and asymptotic SER expressions are derived for the proposed SSK system with path selection. Consequently, performance of the new proposed SM/SSK systems with diversity schemes is studied in this thesis. The advantages of SM/SSK systems with diversity schemes against the conventional MIMO systems are demonstrated. Moreover, analytical expressions corresponding to error probability of the proposed systems are derived. The derived analytical results are validated via comprehensive computer simulations.
A software defined network framework in 5G wireless systems
According to Cisco's Visual Networking Index Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast Report, it is estimated that the global mobile data traffic will increase sevenfold between 2016 and 2021. While, wireless data traffic will grow faster than wired/fixed data traffic (connected through Ethernet) and reach to 67 percent of overall IP traffic by 2020. This aggressive trend from wired to wireless communication technologies also leads a huge increase in the operational, administrative and maintenance activities costs in the current core network deployments. In order to meet these challenges of the current wireless networks deployments (WiMax, LTE), the technologies such as Self-Organizing Networks, Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets) have been proposed and investigated thoroughly in the recent years by academia and industry. However, none of these solutions is solely sufficient to meet the huge upcoming data traffic demand by users globally. Thus, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) focuses on completing standardization of 5G technologies. To this end, 5G wireless systems aim to satisfy bandwidth-thirst of users and industry by improving data-rates, network coverage and latency. In this manner, it is foreseen that 5G systems should rather combine and utilize currently deployed wireless technologies than target for a particular Radio Access Technology (RAT) to accomplish this crucial goal. However, this proposal brings up high heterogeneity in traffic demands and various mobility patterns that further complicates the operation and the management of the network. Meanwhile, SDN is proposed to ease the management of ossified networks by separating the control mechanisms from the actual network hardware where communication data is processed and forwarded. It also boosts the opportunity to implement and test new protocols without vendor intervention. However, since SDN is initially developed for wired networks, integration of SDN with various wireless domains brings out unique challenges that should be handled individually. With the consideration above in mind, this thesis aims to solve the unique challenges of wireless technologies consisted by 5G systems and evaluate the benefits of integrating SDN approach will be to these systems by emphasizing the basic features of SDN. The problems meet in the thesis are defined under two categories such as flow and energy management. First, the proposed flow management solutions are conducted by using manipulating admission control and routing protocols. As mentioned earlier, towards 5G system, it is planned to utilize all possible radio access technologies in order to support reliable services and applications. As the initial part of the thesis, a SDN test-bed with an access management protocol is proposed for Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks. Also, the inclusion of already-deployed Wi-Fi networks in VANET topology is seen as a crucial step for the next generation vehicular networks. However, the VANET topology also requires to preserve the features already offered by dedicated short-range communication (DSCRC) and the core cellular network. To this end, Software Defined Network (SDN) provides a promising opportunity to simplify the management and the control of clumsy network infrastructures by decoupling data and control plane in order to provide elasticity for current networks. Thus, we propose an architectural model which exposes this opportunity in order to enhance VANET with Wi-Fi access capability. Moreover, we offer a novel Software Defined (SD) VANET architecture which consists of soft OpenFlow switches with WiFi capabilities both as Road Side Units and Vehicles. In particular, we first investigate existing test tools and environments for software defined wireless networks and also supply a novel test-bed architecture in order to provide feasible test environment for evaluating the proposed architecture. Lastly, a Wireless Access Management (WAM) protocol is proposed to provide wireless host management and basic flow admission with respect to the available bandwidth to validate the capability of the offered architecture. The basic observation results of the deployed testbed prove the conformity of the offered 802.11 architecture to the VANET. Additionally, we develop a Mininet-based Software-Defined Network (SDN) simulation environment that improves the total flow throughput and scalability of the overall network. Mininet is chosen as a suitable and manageable tool to implement the SDN based flow admission control module in order to configure the entire topology since it has already built in OpenFlow switches and virtual controllers. This open-source platform is also easily configurable via its drag and drop capabilities. Furthermore, for the Control Plane, OpenDaylight controller is used in order to simulate flow admission control module that fairly admits flows into the OpenFlow switches. OpenFlow version 1:3: for communication between separated Data and Control plane and Linux based operating system to build Mininet 2:1:0 are deployed in the simulator environment. From routing protocol point of view to flow management challenge, first a simple test-bed is implemented for Software Defined Wireless Networks as follows. After that, an environment-specific routing protocol is developed for SD-UAV networks. Raspberry Pi's are used as OpenFlow (OF) Switches in the implemented real-time testbed for SDWN. The testbed provides an opportunity to practical development and testing environment for SDWNs. Moreover, we use OpenDayLight to observe the flows and events in the network. With OpenDayLight integration, we easily provide detailed analysis results for any testing process. Also, we develop a traffic aware routing algorithm add-on which manages the flows w.r.t. their QoS requirements. Finally, we physically implement the proposed routing algorithm to our testbed and validate the improvements of traffic aware routing such as controller response time and network utilization. After SDWN test-bed, next part of the thesis focuses on the design of a resilient end-to-end connectivity paradigm under unique architectural and scenario assumptions for Unmanned Aerial Vehicular networks which have capabilities to extend wireless access for devices without infrastructure coverage, and also help establishing a connectivity backbone during military reconnaissance and disaster events. In this manner, first, we assume that the UAVs themselves are equipped with multiple interfaces that use standardized protocols, with associated variation in data throughout, range, and bit error rates. Second, there may be adversarial agents seeking to disrupt connectivity through targeted jamming in 3D spaces. Third, we assume an overlay software defined control plane, where the UAVs function as software switches, able to execute forwarding commands and determine preferred routes under controller directives. Our proposed solution devises metrics that influence the choice of the wireless interface and weights edges formed between UAV pairs. Furthermore, it also uses a multi-layer graph model and creates maximally separated paths in 3D space to ensure resiliency to jamming. Simulation results conducted for urban scenarios reveal 34% improvement in enhanced resiliency for end-to-end outages by trading off 12% increase in latency over competing approaches. Lastly, energy management problem is investigated in the thesis for cellular networks. As mentioned earlier the wireless user demands dramatically increase everyday, and in order to meet increased traffic demands of indoor users, small cell access point (eNodeB) deployment has been introduced in recent 3GPP LTE-A releases (v.8 and further). However, plug and play nature of the eNodeBs lets a dense deployment of eNodeBs and easily cause over-provisioned network infrastructure. Therefore, the consumed power of network topology is extremely increased. While most of the studies aim to optimize power consumption on single traffic types, in this part of the thesis we provide a novel framework which consists of multi-traffic types approach corresponding power adjustment as well as Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of end-users. In order to gain more power saving by considering QoS of end-users, we focus on the energy efficiency vs. spectrum efficiency trade-off. In this manner, we propose a novel Energy Efficiency Coefficient (EEC) in order to consider QoS of end-users and channel utilization parameters while degrading power consumption. This parameter covers conventional bits= joule energy efficiency metric (power part) and additionally contains parameters such as channel utilization and Carrier-to-Interference Ratio (CIR) (QoS part). Moreover, a novel Resource Auction module is proposed that simply assigns resource blocks to low-utilized cellular networks ignoring interference, because of already taking care in proposed EEC formula as CIR. Furthermore, the p2p delay is defined in terms of different traffic types. The traffic types are modelled by using Queuing Theory that enables parametrize p2p delay in terms of utilization effect in proposed EEC formula. Therefore, p2p delay is defined in closed-form expression that provides transition from empirical p2p delay to analytic p2p delay. We also define an optimization problem which employs novel EEC parameters to determine new power levels (8-levels) for eNodeBs configurations with less power consumption. To solve this optimization problem, we introduce a novel heuristic called "Multi Level Branch and Bound Algorithm" (MLBB). MLBB algorithm contains two nested branch and bound algorithms which manipulates end-users differently. In order to measure performance of proposed EEC, the comparison with Sleep mode (simply power-off non-utilized eNodeBs without considering QoS of end-users), and conventional EEC (bits/joule formula without considering CIR that affects QoS of end-users) is preferred. Consequently, the proposed EEC serves end-users with 67% better QoS than the Sleep Mode and 6,2% than Conventional EEC by waiving from power consumption in acceptable rate (loss about 2,5% compared with conventional EEC) because of including utilization effect in proposed EEC formula and taking care QoS of end-user in optimization process (especially two functions between lines 5-28 in MLBB algorithm).
New approaches for quality of service provisioning in cognitive radio networks
Along with the proliferation of wireless communication with diverse services and applications, spectrum efficiency has become a major concern in both licensed and unlicensed frequency bands. Cognitive radio networks (CRNs) stand as a solution for meeting the increasing demand on physically limited frequency spectrum by defining the roles of secondary users (SUs) and secondary networks. These users can adopt their radio transmissions with a dynamic and opportunistic manner with respect to the licensed primary users (PUs) using their software controllable and multi-interface transceivers. Even if the cognitive radio technology defines constrained and secondary networks, along with the increased spectrum demands, the overall network traffic volume and the quality of service (QoS) requirements of associated SUs is expected to increase substantially. In this thesis, encouraged by this forecast, new approaches for QoS provisioning over CRNs are proposed and evaluated. In the first part of the thesis, detailed in Chapter 3, a channel assignment algorithm is proposed for SUs with traffic demands at heterogeneous QoS classes, that is advantageous over the native schemes. The proposed channel assignment algorithm uses an estimation on the PU activity temporal level in the SU packet selection. The temporal PU activity level is estimated by the distributed SUs that only use their local sensing histories via projecting the moving average value of their individual sensing histories into three temporal activity classes. The devised heuristic cognitive channel selection algorithm is first evaluated for preliminary results for a single SU and a single channel environment. Afterwards, considering a more realistic scenario, multi-channel CRN model is studied. The proposed channel selection method is expanded into a multi-channel case. When the designed model is expanded to have multi-user property, a distributed scheduling mechanism is also proposed to alleviate the problem of managing conflicting interests of distributed and selfish SUs within a single collision domain. The proposed scheduling mechanism is a fast and a distributed scheduling method that only uses a centralized information broadcast upon a topology change (i.e. node addition or removal from the system). Both spectrum assignment and scheduling algorithms were evaluated using MATLAB models and compared with the native spectrum assignment scheme and random scheduling in several environments. The simulation results show that the proposed method is advantageous in terms of the Figure of Merit (FoM) metric defined by the weighted sum of throughput ratios of the packets successfully reached to the destination. The proposed method, which basically is a fast PU temporal activity level prediction and a channel selection scheme, reflects its advantageous side especially when the spectrum holes belong to a heavily used PU channel. Later in the second part of the thesis, as a focused case study, MPEG-2 based encoded video transmission problem is studied in Chapter 4 where a distributed and frame-type-differentiated queue management scheme is proposed and evaluated. The proposed queue management method changes the transmit order of the frames in favor of the ones needed by others for them to be decoded and basically decreases the packet loss probability by sending the reference frames first, in order to prevent indirect frame loss due to the decoding dependencies. The discrimination on the packet selection takes place among different video frames within the encoded video burst. The performance of the proposed scheme is investigated with the developed MATLAB model that is supported by FFmpeg tool for encoding operations. The results validate that the proposed scheme outperformed the native scheme that does not discriminate any internal frame type information among the video packets, in various simulation setups in terms of several video quality metrics, namely: Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), Mean Structural SIMilarity metric MSSIM), and decodable frame ratio (Q). The contributions of this thesis are the solutions presented for the efficient spectrum management and quality of service provisioning for multimedia traffic transmission in CRNs. Thesis studies cover several CRN models and novel channel assignment and scheduling strategies that are advantageous over native schemes.
Stable-matching based resource allocation methods in wireless communication systems
As the number of smart devices increases day by day, the need for new resource allocation techniques also increases. 5G technologies such as Long-Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A), carrier aggregated heterogeneous networks (HetNets), or Internet of things (IoT) networks with mobile edge computing (MEC) features require high data rates and ultra low latency with the restricted resources. Resource allocation and secure communication are two of the most important challenges in wireless communication. Graph-based algorithms are proposed in order to achieve resource allocation with a low computational complexity. The primary objective of this thesis is to address the resource allocation challenges, e.g., fairness and stability, by using stable matching (SM)-based approaches. SM algorithm requires channel state information (CSI) before starting allocation. However, CSI transmission may cause an overload of the up-link channel. The problem is extensively elaborated in many aspects for different wireless communication systems such as HetNets and IoT networks. The overload on the uplink channel, through CSI transmission, is decreased significantly by the proposed partial feedback matching (PFM) algorithm. Finally, IoT networks are very fragile against attackers in physical layer as the number of connected smart devices increases. A three state SM-based attacker identification and punishment policy, is proposed in order to increase the robustness of the network. Both analytical and simulation results are presented to demonstrate that the proposed SM-based approaches have better performance than the algorithms that exist in the literature.
IEEE 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6) için çift yönlü zamanlama
In recent years, Wi-Fi, along with Broadband Wireless, has been at the center of wireless communication. End-users owning laptops, tablets, and mobile phones enjoyed connected mobility. This massive adaptation brought more bandwidth demands. Consecutive IEEE 802.11 standard amendments were developed to overcome these requirements. Since hitting the gigabit barrier in IEEE 802.11ac, the main focus has shifted to increasing efficiency and reducing power consumption. Motivated by this, the latest amendment, IEEE 802.11ax, aims to minimize channel contention among network devices due to the very nature of random access, especially in dense areas. In this respect, IEEE 802.11ax, or Wi-Fi 6, brings several improvements focusing on these demands for better user experience and environment protection. In this regard, it introduces Target Wake Time (TWT) to make certain nodes sleep a definite amount of time to preserve power, Overlapping Basic Service Set Preamble Detection (OBSS/PD) to exploit co-existence better, and finally, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) based scheduled access to abandon previously used random access mechanisms by replacing it with scheduled access that allows an Access Point (AP) to schedule and manage traffic by making use of resource level parallelism and multiple spatial streams. This thesis investigates proper scheduling mechanisms and develops novel scheduler that work downlink and uplink directions. Our scheduler ensures maximum throughput delay. We tested our scheduler on state-of-the-art NS-3 network simulator and doubled the performance, leading to better power saving and greener Wi-Fi.
Source localization for molecular communication via diffusion
Molecular communication is a type of communication that provides communication in mediums such as underwater, where traditional communication paradigms are insufficient, and in which information is carried by molecules in fluid environments. However, the fact that the information particles in molecular communication propagates by diffusion prevents us from solving problems such as finding the location of the transmitter with traditional methods. Especially, when the number of transmitters is more than one, the solution becomes more complicated. The solution described in this thesis is to find the locations of the transmitters by employing the coordinates of the molecules hitting the receiver in a fluid environment where there are multiple transmitters and a spherical receiver that absorbs the hitting molecules completely. For this localization solution, first the coordinates of the hitting molecules are clustered with models such as Gaussian, Bayesian mixture models, and K-means. By calculating the average values of the clustered data, the direction of the corresponding transmitter is determined. At the same time, the distance is determined based on the number of data belonging to separate clusters and the probability of the particles hitting the receiver. The results show that the most promising cluster algorithm is K-Means. By calculating the direction and the distance of the locations via clustered data, we can estimate the transmitter locations.
