March 31 June and June 23 Istanbul local elections news comparative discourse analysis: Sabah, Sözcü, Yeniçağ, Milli Gazetteer, Birgün sample

The concept of news is one of the fields on which many thinkers have commented and which is difficult to reconcile. The importance of the concept of news increases significantly, especially when mass communication is considered. When the difference between the news concepts is examined, it is seen that there is a significant difference under the two sub-headings. The first of these is the Liberal-Pluralist theory. According to this approach, the media is the fourth largest force and is seen as a control mechanism. On the other hand, according to the critical theory, it is claimed that the news is not independent and is influenced by ideology. In this study, the concept of news on the basis of ideology is discussed. In this study, which will investigate how the news is built on the masses, the news is examined with Van Dijk's theory of discourse analysis and it is tried to reveal the explicit and implicit structures in the news texts. As the sample of the research, the Istanbul elections held in the Republic of Turkey in 2019 were discussed. Apart from the other elections, the reason why the election in Istanbul was preferred is that the election dated March 31 was canceled and held again on June 23. By examining the differences in discourse in the news about the election between the two elections, it was investigated through which ideological structures the news was created. The news in the weeks in which both elections were held were examined. The dates between 25 March – 31 March, 17 June – 23 June have been determined as the date range. The reason for this is due to the increase in the ideological structure of the expressions in the news discourse as the election day approaches. When we look at the results that emerged from the findings obtained as a result of the study, it is seen that the newspapers construct the news texts with discourses in favor of the ideologically close side of the news they construct while dealing with the election news and against the side they are ideologically opposed to.
