Abstract (EN)

Objectives: Colorectal cancer is a type of cancer that is common among all cancers in both sexes, with a reduction in mortality and morbidity thanks to screening. In our study, we aimed to reveal the prevalence of colorectal cancer in patients with fecal occult blood test positivity within the scope of periodic health examination in patients admitted to the Family Medicine Outpatient Clinic. Materials and Methods: 119 persons between the ages of 50-70 who applied to our University Family Medicine Outpatient Clinic for a health check were included in the study. A questionnaire questioning sociodemographic data, colorectal cancer risk factors and common symptoms in colorectal cancer was applied to the participants. Hemogram, fecal occult blood test, colonoscopy results of the patients and pathology results of the patients who had biopsy during the procedure were evaluated. Results: 62 of 119 people participating (52.1%) in the study were female and 57 were male (47.9%). The average age of the participants was 61.0 ± 7.6 years. Of all the participants 65 of the participants (54.6%) were positive for the stool occult blood test. Five people of the study participants (4.2%) were diagnosed with colorectal cancer. All 5 people diagnosed with colorectal cancer (100%) had positive stool occult blood test, and the rate of malignancy detection in all patients with positive stool occult blood test was found to be 7.7% (n=5) in our study. Conclusion: In our study, a statistically significant relationship was found between the positivity of the fecal occult blood test and the diagnosis of colorectal cancer. The fecal occult blood test, which has easy applicability and cost-effectiveness advantages, is useful in colorectal cancer screening of people aged 50-70.
