Abstract (EN)
Our study aims to compare individuals with asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in terms of nutrient consumption, anthropometric measurements and body composition. A total of 31 asthma patients, of whom 14 were male and 17 were female, and a total of 29 COPD patients, of whom 20 were male and 9 were female, total 60 patients with lung disease, who were monitored in R.T. Istanbul Science University?s Europe Florence Nightingale Research and Application Hospital, The Polyclinic of Pulmonary Diseases and a total of 28 healthy individuals who applied to The Polyclinic of Nutrition-Dietetic and of whom 9 were male and 28 were female, were taken as control group. Physical examination, body composition analysis and anthropometric measurements of the working group were made on the same day, and query records pertaining to 3 days of retrospective nutrient consumption were taken. Statistical examinations were made with `Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Windows 17.0? Windows bundle program, and the results were evaluated within 95% confidence interval and p<0,05 significance level. The Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) of asthma patients (1724±423 kcal) and hip circle (108,9±9,8 cm) were found higher than those of other groups (p<0,05), and the Body-Mass Index (BMI) of the COPD group (25,9±6,7 kg/m²), Body Fat Percentage (%25,2±13,4) and hip circle (101,9±13,6 cm) were found as lower than those of the control group. BMI, BMR, fat-free mass and hip circle values are, in asthma patients (respectively 29,1±5,5 kg/m², 1724±423 kcal, 57,3±14,1 kg, 108,9±9,8 cm), which are higher than that of COPD patients (p<0,05). There is no difference among the three groups in terms of energy consumption (p>0,05). Examined in terms of nutritional components, asthma patients consume more table salt, sodium, chlorine and minerals than the other groups do, and the COPD group consume more water than the other groups do (p<0,05). Consumption of Folic acid, table salt, sodium, chlorine, water and minerals are higher in asthma patients (p<0,05). As a result, demographic characteristics, determination of body composition and anthropometric measurements and nutrient consumption, are regarded as important criteria in determination of nutrition situations of asthma and COPD patients, and formation and follow-up of medical nutrition treatments.Key Words: Asthma, COPD, nutrient consumption, BMI, BMR
