Abstract (EN)

In this study, the dead examination and autopsies performed by Aydın Adnan Menderes University Forensic Medicine Department between 01.01.2015-31.12.2019 will be evaluated. As a result of this evaluation, the socio-demographic characteristics of the cases, forms of reporting, the causes of death, the severe lesions in violent deaths, the methods of making a diagnosis of death and whether to take histopathological samples at autopsy were examined and it was aimed to compare the data obtained with the literature and to determine the measures that can be taken. In the specified times, the Department of Forensic Medicine of Aydın Adnan Menderes University made a retrospectively evaluated 468 cases and it was aimed to profile the death cases. The average age of the cases was 48.15. It was determined that 358 (76.5%) were male and 110 (23.5%) were female. It constitutes the largest group with 34.4% over the age of 60. While 73.7% of deaths were violent, 25.4% of were due to natural causes, the cause of death could not be determined in 0.9% of cases. 54.6% of the natural caused were cardiovascular system related deaths. The biggest cause of violent deaths were traffic accidents with a rate of 41.7%. In determining the cause of death, autopsy was performed in 62.8% of the cases. Histopathological and toxicological samples were taken from 34.4% of the autopsy cases. While taking samples was 65.6% for the cases autopsied for natural reasons, it was 17.2% for violent cases. While autopsy was performed in 96.2% of deaths due to penetrating trauma, no histopathological samples were taken. While autopsy was performed in 93.4% of deaths due to asphyxia, samples were taken only in 21.1% of autopsied cases. In all cases brought to forensic medicine, performing an autopsy procedure will eliminate the medical and legal problems that may arise in the future. In addition, we think that the increase in the number of cases with histopathological sampling in autopsies will guide the diagnosis for supportive and preventable conditions. Although there was no case in which virtopsy was performed in our study, it is an undeniable fact that the use and spread of virtopsy in infectious conditions such as the coronavirus, which has affected the whole world as of 2020, is a necessity of our age. Because the use of virtopsy will be one of the protective factors the health of the employees in appropriate cases and post-portem examination of those known to have infectious diseases.
