The relationship between sleep quality and anxiety and depression in patients with headache

Objective: This study aimed to determine the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of patients with migraine and TTH, and to determine the sleep quality, anxiety and depression status of migraine and gtba patients. Materials and methods: It is a descriptive, cross-sectional and prospective study. The study was conducted with 252 headache patients who applied to Şanlıurfa Harran University Hospital Neurology outpatient clinics between December 2023 and June 2023. Data were collected using the "Survey Form" and Pıtssburgh Sleep Quality Index, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory. Results: There were 252 (133 TTH, 119 migraine) patients in the study. The rate of female patients was higher in the migraine group (p<0.001). The mean duration of pain during headache attack was higher in migraine patients (p=0.040). The mean age of migraine patients was found to be lower (p=0.006). The duration of headache disease was found to be higher in the migraine group (p<0.001). Headache severity rate was found to be higher in migraine patients (p<0.001). The presence of chronic disease was found to be higher in the TCA group (p=0.036). In our study, no significant difference was observed between the two groups in terms of sleep, anxiety and depression (p>0.05). There was a positive moderate correlation between BAI, BDI scores and PUKI of the patients in the TBA and migraine groups (r=0.400, r=0.483). Conclusion: In our study in patients with headache, puki, anxiety and depression scores were found to be high. It has been observed that the frequency and severity of migraine and tensiontype headache are affected by anxiety, depression and sleep quality. Therefore, when treating headache, it is important to recognize the accompanying sleep problems and psychiatric symptoms with a good evaluation and to apply a combined treatment for these problems.
