Abstract (EN)
Playing piano, getting an education on piano, and having a piano in one's house all together refers more than merely being an instrument for self development by being a latent or manifest social status symbol. In its own historical background emerging from certain keyboard musical instruments, representation of piano in Ottoman courts also reveals such a strategy. Likewise in Ottoman period, piano in Republican era enables its owner or master as a modern, progressive individual. Today, piano is still playing such a distinctive role among social classes by providing a conspicuous effect for "new" elites in the case of Göktürk district of Istanbul.
