The assessment of COVİD-19 anxiety and fear of students in medicine in a university hospital

In this study, it was aimed to determine the anxiety and fear of COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) of resident physicians studying in a medical faculty hospital. The universe of this descriptive and cross-sectional study; 340 physicians who continue their specialization training in medicine at the Fırat University Medical Faculty Hospital have reached 291 people. The responsiveness rate is 85.5%. The participants were asked to voluntarily fill in the questionnaire form prepared through the Google form. In the first part of the questionnaire, there are questions about sociodemographic characteristics, and in the second part, questions about the Coronavirus Anxiety and COVID-19 Fear Scale. As the scores obtained from the scale increase, the coronavirus fear and anxiety levels increase. The mean age of the participants in the study was 30.1±4.2. 55.7% of the participants are women, 57.0% are married and 31.3% have children. 8.9% of the participants have a chronic disease and 16.8% are smokers. The coronavirus anxiety and fear scale scores of women, married people, and those with chronic diseases were found to be significantly higher (p<0.05). The coronavirus anxiety and fear scale scores of those working in basic sciences, those who were on active duty, and those who attended the course/training/seminar held in the hospital related to COVID-19 were found to be significantly lower (p<0.05). In conclusion; Coronavirus Anxiety and COVID-19 Fear scale scores of women, married people, and those with chronic diseases are significantly higher. It has been observed that medical residency students are negatively affected by the COVID-19 epidemic, and knowledge and experience about the epidemic reduces this anxiety-fear. Continuity of psychological support and in-service training related to the epidemic should be provided for medical residents and other health workers.
